Mike Trader had 15 points and 13 rebounds, and his consecutive 3-pointers in the third
quarter helped break open a close game as the host Riverton Hawks boys basketball team
defeated Tri-City 49-34 Tuesday night in Sangamo Conference action.
“Those 3-pointers broke our backs,” said T-C coach Steve Dilley.
Trader had eight points in the third quarter as the Hawks went on a 15-5 run to extend a 21-15
halftime lead.
After the triples, which turned a 23-19 game into a 29-19 game, T-C never was within single
digits again.
In fact, Riverton, which played without Josh Trader, out with a knee injury, scored 13 of the last
14 points of the quarter, and the lead was as high as 19 in the fourth quarter.
The Hawk defense limited the Tornadoes to only 14-for-39 shooting and also forced 23
turnovers.
Despite facing a height disadvantage at every position, the Hawks won the boards battle 27-
20.
Kyle Weber’s squad also got nine points and six assists from Spencer Pulliam, seven from
Austin Moore and six from Brandon Barney.
Aaron Bennett paced the Tornadoes with 11 markers, while Matt Justice tallied six.
T-C led 5-2 early on before the Hawks scored the last eight points of the first period, and the
lead reached 17-7 at one point before the Tornadoes scored six points in a row.
The Tornadoes, who never were closer than four points after the first period, had a chance to
get within a deuce in the last minute of the first half, but a missed layup preceded a Trader
bucket 15 seconds later as the Hawks took a 21-15 lead into the locker room.
Riverton won the J-V game 63-39 as Zach Yoggerst poured in 19 points and Alec Seymour
chipped in 12. Bret Thixton, Alex Behrens and Matt Jagodzinski all scored seven.
Sebastian Estes had 13 and Jon Mason six for the Tornadoes.
