T-C JH boys teams split three home games
The Tri-City Tigers junior high boys basketball teams had three home games in the last week, and all three ended with splits.
Against Calvary Nov. 15, the seventh grade started slowly as the visitors had leads of four after one quarter and five at
halftime. In the third quarter, Tri-City’s defense held Calvary to only five points, on their way to scoring 15 for a 10-point lead. T-
C controlled the fourth quarter on its way to a 40-31 win. Trever Martin led the Tigers with 19 points, while Austin Byers added
seven, Billy Watring, Devon Matthews and Matt Standish all scored four and Steven Price two.
The eighth grade, struggling early with turnovers and cold shooting, couldn’t match Calvary’s big scoring half for a 34-2
halftime score. T-C came out and worked hard on both ends, outscoring Calvary 12-10 for a final of 44-14. Chris Bierworth
led Tri-City with nine points, Adam Sagle adding three points and Mason Lyons two points. Versus North Mac Nov. 16, the
seventh grade was down one after one quarter and six at halftime. Just as the night before, Tri-City’s defense picked up in the
third quarter, holding North Mac to four points, as T-C cut the halftime deficit to three, setting up an exciting finish. Battling back
all night, T-C tied the game on a free throw with under a minute. With less than 10 seconds left, T-C forced a turnover and
pushed the ball up the floor, found an open Price, whose shot fell a little short, only to have Martin rebound tip the ball in as the
clock ran out, for a final of 37-35. Martin tossed in 16 points, Price adding 11, Matthews four, Watring three, Standish two and
Byers one. Tri-City’s eighth grade, feeding off the energy of the first game, came out with its best intensity of the year on the
way to a first quarter lead of 12-9. T-C’s scoring slowed in the second quarter, only scoring four points for a deficit of four (20-
16) at halftime.
Tri-City’s scoring couldn’t match North Mac in the third, being outscored 12-6, and they didn’t score in the fourth, losing 46-22.
Bierworth had 11, Lyons seven and Sagle four.
On Nov. 20, the seventh grade came out against Franklin and played their most efficient offensive game of the young season,
along with a good defensive effort. T-C led 17-7 after one quarter and 24-17 at the half. The Tigers scored 17 points in the
third on their way to another victory, 51-35. Martin had 14 points, Byers 12, Price 10, Matthews seven, Watring six and Connor
Wade two. Tri-City’s eighth grade started the game firing and hitting outside shots for a lead of 13-11 (three 3-pointers in the
first quarter) after one quarter. T-C’s offense would cool off in the second quarter, scoring only two points to Franklin’s 13 for a
halftime score of 24-15 Franklin. Playing with short numbers and injuries, T-C would run out of gas in the second half for a
final of 51-25 Franklin. Tyler Capps finished with 11 points, with Lyons scoring five, Bierworth and Ty Durham four and Evan
Stowers one.

Lady Tornadoes beat Gillespie
The host Tri-City Lady Tornadoes trailed by eight early in the second period before storming back, and they overcame poor free
throw shooting in the final stanza to take a 51-45 win over Gillespie Saturday night in girls nonconference hoops action. T-C
went on a 10-0 run to take the lead in the second period, then netted the final four markets (a steal and deuce from Mackenzie
Brunson and then two Brunson charity tosses in the last 20 seconds) to go up 24-20 at intermission. The Lady Tornadoes
scored the first six points of the third period and led by as many as 13 on the way to a 41-32 advantage. Gillespie was down as
many as 11 in the fourth, but got as close as four; T-C missed 14 of its 22 free throws in the final stanza. Kaitlyn Tarr, returning

tallies, while Shelby Cain had seven and Kyla Haukap a pair. Haukap and Kayla Muchorski both had six rebounds, while Cain

Team Sports Player of the Game Kristi Price had 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Katie Price had six points and five boards. Justice

only 13-for-60 from the field but forced 26 turnovers. Stephanie Watkins had eight points and six rebounds, while Justice had six points
and four caroms and Mackenzie Brunson five tallies, four assists and four steals. Kristi Price also grabbed four boards.
Bennett goes over 1000 in T-C loss
Aaron Bennett went over the 1000-point mark, but the ninth seeded Tri-City Tornadoes fell to top seed West Central 52-33 in the first
round of the Waverly Tournament Monday. T-C played Tuesday around press time; a win would have moved the Tornadoes into a
Wednesday contest. “When you do not make shots, you do not look very good,” said coach Steve Dilley. “We had some good looks, but
they would not fall for us.” West Central went on a 15-3 run to take a 20-8 lead on the way to a 27-13 halftime advantage. It was 44-24
heading into the final stanza. Bennett totaled 16 points (he needed 10 for the 1000), and Brandon Fishburn was next with seven. A.J.
Manuele hit two triples (matching Fishburn) and scored six. T-C made just 14 field goals and was just 1-for-7 from the charity stripe.

Kincaid ousts Lady Tornadoes in regional semis
Visiting Mt. Pulaski quickly ruined the Tri-City Lady Tornadoes volleyball Senior Night last Thursday, winning 25-8, 25-9. The Lady Toppers led 6-0 in Game 1 before Tri-
City got on the board. Nicole Henton served one point, as did Katie Price, both off Mt. P errors, but Tri-City only had four servers in a lightning-fast Game 1. Lindsey Downing,
the fourth Tri-City server, was the first to score, thanks to a Kitty Justice kill. Price scored twice as the Lady Tornadoes faced match point (both off errors), but a hitting error
concluded the match. Leah Shumaker finished with eight digs, while Henton and Mackenzie Brunson both had six and Downing five. Justice and Bethany Daniels both
finished with four blocks.
