Jones earns Eagle Scout rank
Brian Jones, son of Mike and Trudy Jones of Dawson, has earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Brian is a member of Troop 46 in Riverton and attends Tri-City High
School. Brian’s Eagle Scout project was to replace and add to the existing poles that display American flags at Camp Butler National Cemetery. His original
project was to replace 100 of the poles. Brian changed the number of poles to be replaced after receiving overwhelming support. At the conclusion of his project,
216 new poles had been installed. The poles and flags are displayed for special occasions. Brian started his scouting experience as a Tiger Cub. He has earned
31 merit badges as a Boy Scout and has held positions of historian, librarian, instructor, assistant patrol leader, patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader and
senior patrol leader.
His Eagle Scout Court of Honor was held Dec. 6 at St. James Church in Riverton.

Lady Tornadoes go 1-3 at Woodruff Tourney
Playing schools much larger than themselves, the Tri-City Lady Tornadoes claimed one win in four contests last
week at the Peoria Woodruff Christmas Tournament. On Tuesday, the Lady Tornadoes downed Northwest
Academy (St. Louis) 38-21.
T-C led 12-9, 23-12 and 28-15 at the quarter breaks. Kaitlyn Tarr had 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Ellie
Krone chipped in nine points and eight boards. Abby Hunt, who made the all-tournament team, finished with five
points and nine caroms. Megan Bucci, who like Kristi Price had four points, dished out six assists. Bucci also
had four steals.
Also on Tuesday, T-C lost to the Metamora Lady Redbirds 66-41 despite shooting 47 percent from the field
(17-for-36). But 23 turnovers did not help, as did the 24-6 deficit after one quarter. Hunt had 10 points and 10
rebounds, while Tarr added eight points and seven rebounds and Krone (seven points), Price and Ally Hunt (six
points each) all had six boards.
On Monday, Canton downed the Lady Tornadoes 64-17; T-C shot only 8-for-30 from the field. Krone, Tarr and
Price all had four points, and Abby Hunt led with nine rebounds. Tarr grabbed six caroms. The host Lady Warriors
also whipped T-C, by a 63-20 count. The Lady Tornadoes had 29 turnovers and made only seven field goals.
Abby Hunt led with five points and eight rebounds, and Krone and Ally Hunt both had four points and four
rebounds. Tarr swiped seven steals. Canton won the tournament by tiebreaker over Woodruff and Metamora by
virtue of fewest points allowed.

Four file for T-C school board
There will be one incumbent and three possible newcomers on the ballot for Tri-City School Board. Current
board member Bill Marvin, along with Mike Boggs, Patricia Henton and Bobbie Moore, have filed to run in the
April 7 election. Three slots are available to join the seven-person board. Dave Armintrout and Karen Thompson
decided not to run for re-election.
There will be a candidate forum at some point before the election, noted Superintendent Dave Bruno, but the
date has not been finalized yet. The forum will be sponsored by the Tri-City Education Foundation.

Incumbents lead way in village office filings
There will be many of the same faces in public office in Buffalo, Dawson and Mechanicsburg, based on those
who filed to run for office.
In Buffalo, Mayor William Vetter is running unopposed, and two incumbents, Lori Payne-Mullett and Pam Paul,
are among three people running for four-year trustee terms.
While Rose Magowan is not running for re-election, Dan Rodden has filed to run for trustee. There are three
positions available on the board.
In Dawson, Mayor Robert Day is running unopposed, as is Village Clerk Pat Curry. Carole Joan Davis, Nancy
Prytherch and John D. Reilly Jr. all are running for re-election on the board. There are no other candidates for the
three slots.
There will be some changes in Mechanicsburg, however, as Mayor Dana Edwards is not running. The only filer
for mayor is Doug Trew. Ken Metcalf, Albert Hohimer and Tony Shoaff all are running for re-election on the village
board; no others filed to run. Shannon Tinkham is not running for re-election as village clerk; no one else has
filed for that position.

Justice named Tri-City and Illini Bank
Student/Athlete of the Month
Tri-City and Illini Bank are honoring Matt Justice for Student/Athlete of the Month for the Month of January. Matt is a
junior at Tri-City who has a GPA of 4.139 on a 4.0 scale. He is ranked first in his class and is on the superior
honor roll. Matt is a great role model for other students. He works very hard in school organizations as well as
sports. He is a member of DUI Task Force, Teen Court, Student Council and was in the madrigal earlier this
school year. He also volunteers time to help referee basketball games for the fifth grade basketball team and is
a volunteer coach for the middle school community soccer team. Matt also finds time to be a three-sport athlete.
He has been on the Mt. Pulaski/Tri-City soccer team all three years in high school. He was the leading scorer
and the assists leader for the team. He is the co-captain and has a great work ethic and attitude to help lead the
team.
Matt is also a starter on the boys’ basketball team. He is leading the team in 3-point field goals, his points per
game average is 9.5 and he averages 3.5 rebounds per game. He is a very tough defender that is always
defending the opposing team’s best player. Matt is also planning to run track and play baseball this spring. Matt
is an amazing part of the Tri-City School District and contributes much to the teams and organizations he is a
member of and in his volunteer work with children. Also a big thanks to the Mechanicsburg Illini Bank for making
the Student/Athlete of the Month possible. The Mechanicsburg Illini Bank is donating a $50 savings bond to the
Student/Athlete of the Month every month.

Chris Heck, a graduate of Tri-City, is serving in
Afghanistan as part of the Illinois National
Guard. Last year in the village right next to
where he is serving, over 300 people died
because of the cold. The Afghan winters are
brutal and some outlying posts already have
three feet of snow. In response to what he and
the other service men and women were
witnessing, Chris requested blankets, coats,
hats and mittens. Mrs. Janis Bredehoft,
Special Education Teacher in Tri-City Schools,
began collecting items that the Junior High
and High School students, faculty, and staff
donated. The Student Council also made a
donation to help pay for the shipping. Due to
the generosity of Junior High and High
School, five large boxes were shipped over. In

Lady Tornadoes ousted by Virginia
By Byron Painter
Editor
The 3-point shot is a potent weapon, as the Tri-City Lady Tornadoes girls basketball team found out Tuesday
night. No. 2 seed Virginia/A-C Central nailed eight triples, including seven before halftime, to end the first-ever
T-C season with a thud in the Athens Regional, 54-28. Coach Stan Price tried several different defenses, but
none of them could stop 1000-point scorer Megan Bergerud and the Lady Redbirds.
Virginia led 8-2 early, then the Lady Tornadoes got within 10-8 a short time later.
But Virginia nailed back-to-back triples 24 seconds apart to make it 16-8, and T-C got no closer than six the rest
of the game. A 19-10 first-period lead turned into a 38-15 halftime bulge for the Lady Redbirds, who forced 21
T-C turnovers and limited the Lady Tornadoes to only 12-for-43 shooting.
Abby Hunt led the Lady Tornadoes with nine points, while Ellie Krone and Kaitlyn Tarr both had six. The Lady
Tornadoes concluded their initial season at 11-13, and though how they got to 11 wins was not necessarily what
Price expected (with no wins over teams with winning records), knocking on the door of the .500 mark is a good
start for the program (especially considering T-C lost one home game in OT and another by 4).
Now, hard work in the offseason can help the squad take the next step, noted Price.
