Daniels named Tri-City
Student/Athlete of Month
Tri-City and Illini Bank are honoring Haley Daniels for
Student/Athlete of the Month for the Month of October.
Haley is an eighth grader at Tri-City who has a GPA of
3.857 on a 4.0 scale.
She was selected to attend the Sangamon County
School Masters Leadership Conference this year. She
is a natural actress, which helps out the literary team
and the school’s Madrigals production. On top of all of
those activities, she is a four-sport athlete. She just
finished a wonderful softball season. She is a starting
pitcher and shortstop for the Tigers.  She was the
team’s MVP and a wonderful teammate.
Haley is also the starting guard on the girls’ basketball
team. She is the assist leader and in the top two in
points and rebounds. She is an amazing leader on the
team that leads by example. Haley is no slouch in
volleyball either. She is the Tigers’ biggest offensive
weapon. She has a strong and accurate serve and
should lead the team in blocks and spikes in the
upcoming season. Finally, as if the school year hasn’t
been busy enough, she will also be on the track team
at the end of the year. Her all-around athleticism
makes it difficult for a coach to determine which events
to put her in. She is fast enough to run the 100-meter
dash, but has the endurance and long legs for the 400
or 800-meter run.  Last year, she excelled at the high
jump and the hurdles, where she could qualify for
state this year, but with that strong pitching arm, she
could probably be amazing at that as well. Haley is a
wonderful well-rounded student athlete at Tri-City and
is going to have an amazing high school career to
match what she has done so far. Also a big thanks to
the Mechanicsburg Illini Bank for making the
Student/Athlete of the Month possible. The
Mechanicsburg Illini Bank is donating a $50 savings
bond to the Student/Athlete of the Month every month.

Spanish II students learn about Hispanic
culture through class and the textbook, but
rarely get to see it anywhere else.  On Nov. 3,
the class became part of the culture with a trip
to Chicago. The Museum of Science and
Industry hosted the Hispanic Flamenco Ballet’
s performance of “Spain Alive.”  This show
presented the music and dances from many
Hispanic countries and some of our students
showed their talent on stage. After a
spectacular dance presentation, we had to
hurry to the Mexican neighborhood to see the
“La Vida Sin Fin” exhibit at the National
Museum of Mexican Art.  The Day of the Dead
celebration on Nov. 1 and Nov. 2 is extremely
important in Mexican culture.  The museum
every year has an exhibit of several ofrendas
honoring lost loved ones. Students saw
ofrendas dedicated to writers, relatives,
children and the major exhibit honoring all of
those killed by the Mexican government 40
years ago in the Tlateloco massacre.  El Dia
de los Muertos is a celebration of life and a
time to honor people who have come before
us. Out last stop would continue to emphasize
extreme differences in culture.  Water Tower
Place is a six story shopping mall on Michigan
Avenue in downtown Chicago.  Students had
a couple of hours to try unusual foods, people
watch or pick up a souvenir before it was time
to head home. The “big city” cultural
experience was one the students won’t soon
forget.  This memory was made possible by
funding from the Tri-City Education
Foundation and they receive muchisimas
gracias.

Lady Tornadoes win
first-ever contest
It did not take long for the Tri-City girls basketball
team to reach the win column.
The Lady Tornadoes won their first-ever game
Monday night with a 47-32 win at Mt. Olive.
Stan Price’s squad won the second half 26-11 after
a 21-21 halftime tie.
“I think we were nervous at the start,” said Price.
“We were very tentative in the first half, but we finally
put it together in the second half.”
After intermission, the Lady Tornadoes, led by
Megan Bucci and Ellie Krone, started to penetrate
more aggressively, which led to some easy buckets
for Abby Hunt and Kaitlyn Tarr. Tarr led the way with
16 points while grabbing eight rebounds; Hunt had
a double-double with 14 tallies and 12 rebounds.
Bucci also reached double figures with 10 markers,
making 5-of-8 from the field. She also led with five
assists. T-C overall shot 44 percent (20-for-45).
Meanwhile, the T-C defense picked up after
halftime as well.
“We packed it in and made them shoot outside
jumpers,” said Price, noting the host Lady Wildcats
were struggling from the outside.
In the J-V tilt, T-C also claimed victory, 42-19. Julie
Ealey and Stephanie Watkins both tossed in 11
points, and Ally Hunt chipped in 10. Hunt, like her
older sister, also finished with a double-double as
she corralled 11 rebounds. Ealey and Kenzie
Johnson both grabbed seven rebounds. The Lady
Tornadoes shot 43 percent from the floor (19-for-
44).
Tornadoes slip past
Edinburg
Aaron Bennett scored 21 points, including eight
in the final quarter, and the Tri-City Tornadoes
boys basketball team rallied for a 54-52 win over
host Edinburg in the Edinburg Turkey
Tournament Monday.
“We played with nice intensity in the fourth
quarter and fought our way back into the game,”
said T-C coach Steve Dilley.
Allen Ealey added 11 (including the last four
points as T-C broke a 50-50 tie), Matt Justice
nine and Gerad Eskew seven for T-C, which
trailed 44-37 heading into the final stanza.
Edinburg led 34-26 at halftime after outpointing
the Tornadoes 20-12 in the second quarter. The
Tornadoes made 7-of-9 free throws in the final
period. Edinburg had the ball for the final 1:11;
the Tornadoes had fouls to give and used them,
forcing the Wildcats to keep taking the ball out of
bounds. Edinburg got off two contested shots in
the final seconds, but both misfired.

statewide named to the Champaign
News-Gazette All-State team last month. She
was the only Sangamo Conference player

from the MSM Conference on the honorable

players for its first team and 18 for its second
team, and Chatham Glenwood star Hannah
Werth, a Nebraska recruit, was named Player of
the Year. Other local players honored were A-C
Central teammates Taylor Jacobs (special
