Dawson Fire
Department earns
grant
The Dawson Fire Protection District has
been awarded a grant through the
Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG)
Program, which is part of the Federal
Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
This grant award totals $59,460, which will
aid in purchasing 16 new sets of
firefighting gear to include coats, pants,
boots and nomex hoods; a
washer/extractor machine to clean the gear
according to NFPA standards, preventing
the volunteers from continuous exposure to
carcinogens that can impregnate on the
gear during firefighting operations;
software to be utilized in training firefighters
to the minimum standards of firefighting;
laptop computer and projector and
additional training aids. The fire district will
have to provide a five percent matching
share for the grant, which totals $2,973.  As
an example, just one set of firefighting gear
can cost approximately $1,700 (coat and
pants).  With the fire district’s FY 2008
budget of approximately $46,000, this grant
will go a long way in helping support the
operations of the fire department.  This is a
competitive grant nationwide with fire
departments requesting over $3.2 billion in
federal funds and submitting over 21,000
applications from across the country in
2008.  In 2007, the AFG awarded
$460,001,163 to fire departments across
the United States.
Andy Waters and Amelia Kirby were the

Tri-City High School.
Brett Turner, Lauren Henebry, Mackenzie
Brunson and Aaron Bennett have been
inventorying copies of TRIC (Tri-City’s former
high school newspaper) and individual
issues so they may be preserved for future Tri-
City alumni. The MS/HS library has bound
TRIC copies from 1964-1978, with individual
copies from 1979-1992.  Several copies of the
junior high newspaper called the ElectriCity
are included in the holdings.  If you have any
copies you would like to donate, please drop
them by the high school office.
Tri-City Boy Scouts
have been busy
The Boy Scout Troop 222 of the Tri-City (and Illiopolis)
areas has been a very busy organization.  Recently we
held the Annual Court of Honor, presenting awards to
many of our scouts for rank advancement, merit
badges earned and other accomplishments.  In the
past year, we have been involved in community service
projects, been to summer camp, canoe, scuba and
caving trips, practiced first aid (placing first and sixth in
the council’s first aid meet) and much more.    We
have been helping two of our scouts with their very
impressive Eagle Projects.   And this past weekend,
we enjoyed a beautiful campout at our district’s Fall
Camporee, where the boys competed using their
skills and exhibiting their teamwork. Every year, the
boys have an opportunity to earn “Scout Bucks” to help
pay their individual expenses.
This year they are selling Holiday Evergreens and Trail’
s End Popcorn until the last weekend of October.
Please consider supporting the Troop.   It means a lot
to a young man to be able to “earn his own way.”  If you
have any questions, please call Kathy Kilhoffer at 364-
4771.

Lady Indians cruise past Tri-City

Visiting Pawnee never trailed in Game 1 and only briefly trailed in Game 2 in a 25-12, 25-18 win over
Tri-City Thursday night in high school varsity volleyball action.
Pawnee led 6-0 in the opening game after Avery Bourne rattled off six tallies. Courtney Dennis had a
pair of kills in the run, which also included kills from Payge Bowen and Mallory Crain. Kristi Price got
two back for the Lady Tornadoes (Kelsey Power had a kill), but Bowen responded with three markers
(Dennis put away the last point with a kill after two T-C hitting errors).Kenzie Johnson’s kill gave
Courtney Osborne and T-C a point, but Dennis scored two (kills from Megan Fleigle and Crain) to
stretch the Pawnee lead to 13-5. A Kaitlyn Tarr block on Abby Hunt’s serve got the Lady Tornadoes to
14-8, but three Jaclynn Whitlow points (including an ace) extended Pawnee’s advantage.
Stephanie Watkins scored once for T-C, but two points from Bourne (Dennis kill) and a point from
Bowen (T-C hitting error) helped clinch Game 1 for the Lady Indians.
Price scored two to begin Game 2, then the Lady Indians took the lead for good with four Bourne
points (her last point was an ace). Dennis (Crain tip) and Hunt (a Pawnee hitting error after a several-
minute rally) traded points, then Crain scored twice (Lakin Puzey block and Fleigle kill) to put Pawnee
up 11-6. A point from Fleigle and two from Bourne (with a Crain block ending the second tally)
extended the Pawnee bulge to 17-9. Dennis and Hunt traded tallies (Hunt with an ace) to leave it 21-
13, and after a Crain marker made it 22-14, Watkins rattled off four points in a row (Megan Bucci had
kills to end the first two, then Tarr had a kill before a Pawnee hitting miscue).
But Fleigle’s kill ended the run, and Whitlow served out the match with two aces. Osborne had nine
assists and Hunt and Power both had three kills for the Lady Tornadoes.
Monday, the Lady Tornadoes lost to Athens 25-17, 25-15. Hunt had six kills and six blocks, while Tarr
added five kills and Johnson three. Osborne had six assists, one more than Watkins. Price had eight
service points.
Earlier this month, the Lady Tornadoes J-V team finished in third place at the Pawnee Tournament.
They beat Rochester and Pawnee in pool play but lost to Williamsville. In the tournament part, they
lost to Glenwood, then beat Williamsville for third place as Lexie Klasinz served an ace on the final
point. Members of the team were Mackenzie Brunson, Lauren McArty, Klasinz, Ally Hunt, Watkins,
Leah Shumaker, Nicole Henton, Johnson and Katie Price.

Mt. Pulaski/Tri-City
soccer nips Athens
Griffin Brunson and Nate Johnston scored goals as
the Mt. Pulaski/Tri-City soccer team edged Athens 2-1
Saturday. Brunson scored, with an assist from fellow
T-C student Chris Curry, who played a “perfectly
weighted backheel pass,” in coach Christian Fletcher’
s words, to Brunson. “It was a beautiful goal,”
exclaimed Fletcher. T-C student Matt Justice assisted
on Johnston’s tally. Athens’ only goal was a Mt.
Pulaski own goal. The Hilltoppers outshot the
Warriors 11-5, and T-C student Skylar Morris made
three saves in goal for Mt. Pulaski. Last week, Blue
Ridge edged the Hilltoppers 1-0 despite nine saves by
Morris.
