School district ranks in top 10 percent in State
Tri-City CUSD No. 1 recently was recognized by School Search and Bright Star. School Search is an
educational research and consulting firm that publishes rankings of school systems. School Search
has provided comparative district information for corporations, homebuilders, school districts, libraries,
real estate professionals and relocating families since 1991. This organization recognizes school
districts that meet the criteria for the highest student performance and the lowest per pupil operating
cost. This year, School Search has recognized 82 of the 871 Illinois public schools with the Bright Star
award. The awards criteria are based on districts whose students’ academic performance ranks in the
upper one-third of Illinois school districts, but whose expenditure per pupil ranks in the lower one-fourth
of Illinois Schools. The Tri-City CUSD No. 1 numbers meet the 20.6 score for the ACT average as well
as the operating expense per pupil below $7,361.
“We are very proud of our student body as well as the entire Tri-City staff to enable our district to be
recognized for such an award,” said Superintendent Dave Bruno. “It is a true testament that hard work
and dedication does pay off for everyone involved.
“As a district, we are very pleased that our students can achieve such marks and our staff can provide
opportunities for all our students to succeed.”

Tigers drop two
The Tri-City Tigers baseball team is scoring runs, but not enough. Friday, the Tigers started off strong
but eventually lost to Athens 15-5. Dalton Luka had two hits in the contest to lead the offense, while
Colton Booth, Larry Kurina and Austin Antonacci each contributed one hit. On Saturday, Bryce Paul
was 4-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored, but the Tigers lost to Blessed Sacrament 19-10.
Kurina added two hits and two runs scored, while Colton Eckhardt, Luka, Joe Allen, Booth, Robbie
Constant and Chris Bierworth all had one hit each.
Lady Tigers receive top seed at regionals
The Tri-City Lady Tigers have received the top seed in their softball regional, to be held Sept. 13 and
16 at Hartsburg-Emden. Though the Lady Tigers were rained out Monday at Williamsville, last
Tuesday Tri-City bested Auburn 12-7. Auburn led 4-0 after one-half inning, but the Lady Tigers
managed at least one run in every frame to emerge victorious. Lexie Jarrett scored three times, after
two singles and a walk. Bethany Daniels scored three times, while Hailey Daniels and Hailey Derry
both scored twice. Libby Prehoda and Grace Dean each scored once. Last Wednesday, the Lady
Tigers had eighth grade night, honoring Hailey Daniels, Lindsey Downing, Rachel Shanle and Kaitlyn
Sommer. After the opening festivities, T-C went out and drilled Pleasant Plains 10-0. Hailey Daniels
tossed a no-hitter in the five-inning affair, fanning three. Only one runner reached base for Plains, via
an error. “It was a total team effort,” said coach Bill Ferrill. Downing walked twice, singled once and
scored twice from her leadoff slot. Jarrett singled and had one RBI, while Derry scored in the first
inning. Hailey Daniels also plated the final run in the fifth with a single. Though she is unable to bat
because of a hand injury, Ferrill credited first baseman Kyla Haukap with some key defense. “She
was fantastic,” said Ferrill. “She made some tough fielding players and dug several throws to first out
of the dirt to record outs, not errors.” Bethany Daniels scored in the third, and Rachael Riser singled
in a run while also making a long running basket coach in right field to foil a possible Plains hit.
Shanle reached base three times on bunts and scored twice, and Prehoda walked and scored in the
third. Megan Spain singled in two runs in the fifth and also made a nice running catch that robbed
Plains of a hit. “It was a special day not only for the four eighth graders, but for the whole team, the
parents and the coaches,” said Ferrill. T-C lost Friday to Christ the King. T-C will play either
Greenview or Illini Central in the regional semifinals Saturday morning; with a win, the Lady Tigers
will play either host Hartem or Mt. Pulaski in the regional title game.
Mt. Pulaski/Tri-City soccer gets first win
After a 6-2 loss to Taylorville last week, the Mt. Pulaski/Tri-City soccer team picked up its first win last
Thursday against the Heyworth Hornets by a 3-1 count. But first, against Taylorville, Kendal Gibbs
scored in the first half, which ended knotted at 1-1. The Tornadoes scored four times in a 12-minute
span to take control. Gibbs also scored in the second half for Mt. Pulaski, which was outshot 23-12. T-
C student Skylar Morris made 13 saves in goal. In the win over Heyworth, Mt. Pulaski trailed just a
minute in before rallying. T-C students Chris Curry and Andy Waters combined on a goal in the 10th
minute, with the latter finding the back of the net. Waters scored again in the 37th minute, thanks to a
‘nicely slotted ball,’ in coach Christian Fletcher’s words, from fellow Tornado Matt Justice. Gibbs
concluded the scoring in the 70th minute. Mt. Pulaski outshot the Hornets 27-8, and Morris made five
saves. “The kids are getting it, they played with confidence, intensity and intelligence,” said Fletcher.
Playing in Buffalo Saturday, the Hilltoppers lost 3-1 to Lutheran despite controlling much of the game,
according to Fletcher. Justice assisted Curry on Mt. Pulaski’s only goal, in the 58th minute. Morris
made 10 saves in the defeat.

A highly successful 70th anniversary reunion
for Tri-City High School was held Saturday at
the sparkling new Riverton Eagles facility on
Old Decatur Road. While roughly 300 people
had signed up to attend, approximately 400
actually showed up, leading to a
standing-room-only crowd. Prizes were given
out for the oldest graduate in attendance and
for the person who traveled the furthest (look
for them elsewhere in the paper), and plans
were made for a 75th anniversary
extragavanza in five years. In this photo,
school board member Dave Armintrout (left)

FFA jacket of Bill Marvin, which still fits him
after 40 years.
