Tri-City board votes to
refinance bonds
By Byron Painter
Editor
In a 10-minute special board meeting last
Thursday, the Tri-City School Board voted to
refinance bonds. Four of the seven members were
in attendance (though the three absent members
agree with the decision). The refinancing of bonds,
because of lower interest rates, will be through
working cash bonds. What that means, according
to superintendent Dave Bruno, is that “the bond and
interest levy will not exceed the upcoming year’s
value for the life of the bonds.” So that part of the tax
levy will not increase for the life of the bonds, now
set for 2020 (the old bonds were to run through
2018). Through this process, that specific levy will
go up four cents next year but stay the same
through 2020, instead of possibly going up 12-15
cents through that time frame, Bruno added. “In the
long run, this will save our taxpayers’ money,” said
Bruno, who cautioned that other parts of the levy do
not have the same no-tax increase guarantee.
Before the regularly scheduled July 10 board
meeting, there will be a public hearing to begin at 7
p.m. to discuss this issue, according to Bruno.
