Abbott receives honor from SIUE
Alisha Abbott of Dawson, a 2007 Buffalo Tri-City High School graduate, has been inducted
into the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society at Southern Illinois University at
Edwardsville.
To be selected, students must maintain at least a 3.5 GPA and be in the upper 20 percent
of their class.
Phi Eta Sigma is the nation’s oldest and largest honor society for first year university
students. The society’s mission is to encourage and reward academic excellence among
freshmen in institutions of higher learning.
Alisha was also selected as a 2008 Springboard Student Leader at SIUE. Selection was
based on a personal interview, communication skills and leadership abilities.
Student leaders stay on during the summer to welcome incoming freshmen as well as
helping them to register for their classes and become familiar with the campus.
Later this summer, Alisha will travel to Costa Rica during a four-week Study Abroad
Immersion Program. While there, she will be living with a host family and attending school
while being surrounded by the language on a daily basis.
Students learn to live within a different environment while getting to know another culture
firsthand. Students learn about themselves through the experience as well as expanding
their worldview.

North County Teen Court uses different tack
for offenders
By Byron Painter
Editor

to a speedy trial with an impartial jury.  It just does not say how old that jury has to be.
The North County Teen Court, which covers Buffalo, Dawson, Mechanicsburg, Riverton,
Sherman, Spaulding and Williamsville, has for almost three years been hearing cases
while helping to alleviate the already overcrowded county juvenile court system. (
