Mechanicsburg-Buffalo Water Commission delays rate increase
At its regular monthly meeting Sept. 13, the Mechanicsburg-Buffalo Water Commission voted to postpone a rate increase that had been scheduled to go into effect since 2009. That
ordinance provided for annual rate increases through the year 2012, to insure that the Commission could meet its obligations to the IEPA and our local Town and Country Bank for loans to
improve the water treatment plant and a new raw water line to the plant. Thanks to the dedicated work of the Commission’s former chairman and our engineers, Benton and Associates, the
Commission received about $360,000 in stimulus funds toward those projects. With overall expenses now somewhat lower than projected back in 2009 and our communities struggling with
the poor economy, the Commission felt it could forego the rate increase for a while. The Commission will revisit this matter in February 2012, noted Chairman John Watkins. (Sept. 29, 2011)
