Williamsville School District test scores well
above state average

While there is always room for improvement, the test scores for the Williamsville School District are well
above the state average in many categories.
In science, for example, fourth graders in every year since 2000 have exceeded state averages (by no
less than 11 percent). In 2008, almost 91 percent of fourth graders met or exceeded standards compared to
76.2 percent statewide.
For seventh graders, just under 89 percent met or exceeded standards, compared to 77.7 percent
statewide.
The reading numbers were exemplary as well. For 2008 third graders, 91.5 percent met or exceeded
standards, almost 20 percent better than statewide; fourth grade numbers were almost the same, with 91.6
percent of Williamsville students meeting/exceeding standards compared to 73.2 percent statewide.
Fifth graders in reading bested state results by almost a dozen percent (85.4 to 73.6).
A whopping 94 percent of sixth graders met or exceeded standards, compared to 79.1 percent statewide.
The seventh graders and eighth graders also were much better than state standards; for the seventh
graders, almost 89 percent met/exceeded standards (77.7 percent statewide), and for their eighth grade
counterparts, it was 87.2 percent in the district compared to 81.4 statewide.
The math numbers were also excellent; 99 percent of third graders met/exceeded standards, almost 14
percent better than state scores.
For fourth graders, 97.2 percent of Williamsville students met or exceeded standards (84.6 percent
statewide).
Moving up the age ladder, fifth graders saw 93.2 percent meet/exceed standards, while 98 percent of
sixth graders, 90.3 percent of seventh graders and 89.1 of eighth graders also did so.
On PSAE results, taken by juniors, reading scores were almost 15 percent than statewide (68.4 to 53.3),
while math scores (58.2 to 53 percent) and science scores (70.4 to 51.2 percent) also bested statewide
averages.
Superintendent Dave Root was very pleased with the results and knows why scores are so high in
Williamsville.
“We have outstanding teachers who have worked extremely hard with our students over the years and
have developed a comprehensive interdisciplinary curriculum,” said Root. “In addition, our district maintains
great support from our parents in the home, where they have been instrumental in assisting, reinforcing
and emphasizing the importance of school work and education.”
