Bullets shoot down Hawks
Jakob Kristensen and Aaron Gantt scored second half tallies as the host Williamsville boys soccer team
downed Riverton 3-1 last Friday.
Kristensen actually scored twice for the Bullets.
Thomas Kocis netted the only marker for the Hawks.
Most of the first half was played in the Bullets’ offensive end, but Hawks’ keeper Zac Hardin was up to the
challenge on several occasions.
Riverton’s best early chance came in the 12th minute, when Evan Peterson’s shot from the corner forced
Drew Lazar to make a save.
Near the halfway point of the first half, Gantt and Bricklin Welch combined for some solid Bullet pressure,
and Welch’s 20-yarder was stopped by Hardin.
A short time later, the Bullets had three straight corner kicks; the first one produced the best chance, when
Hardin skied for the ball but could not corral it; however, no Bullet could bury the ball before it went out of
bounds.
The next two corners did not produce a serious scoring chance.
In the 26th minute, Riverton’s Spencer Pulliam set up Jace Burnham after a nice ball, but Burnham’s shot
under pressure was snuffed out by the senior Bullet keeper.
Pulliam set up Josh Dubois a few minutes later, but the latter’s shot was just over the crossbar.
A minute later, in the 34th minute, Kocis buried a free kick from about 23 yards out to put the Hawks in front.
The Bullets had two corners in the following two minutes, but could not cash in, but Max Parienti’s bunch
pulled even on a fantastic transition play.
Pulliam’s centering pass was headed out of danger by Gary Stover, and a few seconds later, Gantt found
Kristensen, who beat Hardin to knot the score.
Gantt put the Bullets up for good four minutes into the second half; Kristensen passed the ball to Welch,
whose shot was stopped; however, the Hawks could not clear the ball, and Gantt a short time later picked up
the loose ball and nailed a shot past Hardin.
Gantt assisted on Kristensen’s goal later in the half to seal the win. He slotted the ball through the back
end of the Riverton defense to set up a one-on-one situation with the keeper and Kristensen.
The Bullets finished with nine shots to only two for the Hawks.

Tuesday at the Lanphier Classic, the Bullets lost to Urbana 3-0. They were outshot 12-2.
All three Tiger tallies were unassisted.
But the WHS coaches were very happy with the effort, according to assistant Steve Wakefield, especially
considering two starters and one reserve did not play because of injury, one was out with illness and then
Gantt left 25 minutes in because of an ankle injury.
“We played good soccer against a good team,” said Wakefield. “If this sort of play continues throughout the
season, the boys will see many more successes than not.”
