Sherman dealing with mosquito problem

Those pesky mosquitoes are posing problems in Sherman, despite the village’s best efforts.
The Village has already sprayed numerous times, according to Mayor Trevor Clatfelter, who has been
getting contacted by several constituents about this issue.
Sherman has been getting guidance from the Sangamon County Department of Public Health on this
issue.
“We put the tablets, brickets, donuts and pellets in all of the storm sewers and standing water areas,”
said Clatfelter, who has been told that these mosquitoes can travel up to 20 miles. “They work much better
than spraying, but since citizens cannot visibly see that they have been put out for a week or so, I have
Public Works spraying in addition to treating the various areas with the tablets.”
But there is a kicker, since the mosquitoes are “flood plain” mosquitoes, and with the high levels of
water because of heavy winter snow and a rainy spring, Clatfelter said “we are experiencing the problem
even worse.”
The Department of Public Health has a specialist using the department’s own equipment to treat the
ditch along Zimmerman Drive and other difficult-to-reach areas.
They have a ‘gun’ that shoots the pellets deeper into wooded areas, according to Clatfelter.
“We are doing pretty much all we can, but the type of mosquito is difficult to combat against,” he said.
