Cleanup day set for May 8 in Sherman

At a brisk and jovial 30-minute meeting Tuesday night, the Sherman Village Board set the date for the
annual Villagewide Cleanup Day for May 8.
The hours are planned to be the same as last year. 8 a.m.-noon, and there will be no cost to residents.
Mayor Trevor Clatfelter wanted to get the date set so arrangements can be made with local trash haulers.
There were two different locations last year, and the consensus was to continue that because it was “a lot
smoother” than when there was only one location, according to Trustee Jay Timm, the point man for the
project.
As of right now, televisions and computers will not be taken; Trustee Nancy Zibutis said it was an issue
last year and brought it up for discussion this year.
There was discussion about working in conjunction with BLH Computers, but it would charge 20 cents per
resident, which would run around $750; Clatfelter argued that would not be a good use of taxpayer funds.
There were localized garage sales that day, but that did not go over well, noted Clatfelter, because of the
conflicts.
One topic discussed that Timm will check on is scrap metal costs; the village received quite a bit of scrap
metal that was picked up by local haulers, which in turn made money for those companies, money the Village
of Sherman did not get.
Timm will look into a percentage deal with the companies.
Village Engineer Dave Booher noted he plans to bring the new sewer rate ordinance proposal to the next
meeting.
The bid letting for the South Sherman Boulevard/Village Center Drive project is still on track for March, he
said.
Clatfelter also signed a waiver (on a letter penned by Trustee Jeff Mitchell) that requested an extension on
grant funding for the Route 66 Veteran’s Memorial Park to Oct. 1.
Clatfelter met with the village architects last week on this project.
The third item in Clatfelter’s report, a Collective Bargaining Agreement with the Public Works Department
union (Teamsters/Professional & Technical Employees Union No. 916), was tabled once again, but the
process is nearing completion.
“It is all but finalized,” said Clatfelter; there was a meeting Monday night which should be the final meeting
before ratification by the village board.
There will be a census committee meeting Feb. 8.
Zibutis in her report brought up a conversation she has had with Upcycle Products, a green energy
company that is in the business of recycled rain barrels (which would help with water conservation).
The Williamsville Village Board, which has formed a Garden Club, will be working with this company, but
after some discussion, it was decided that Sherman would not pursue an agreement at this time.
