Williamsville village Web site design done
By Linda Hughes
In a brief meeting Monday, the Williamsville Village Board discussed renting a trolley or other form of
transportation for 20-minute historic tours of the town during the July 4 Celebration. The Community Relations
and Services Committee is working with the Williamsville Historical Museum to identify historic places and with
elderly people in the community who also know historic places, Trustee Valerie Patterson said.
Trustee Janice Beyers, who heads the committee, said that Country Insurance has booked a musician for the
celebration, and that a juggler has also been booked. She is working with School Superintendent David Root to
use the Fine Arts Center at the high school for the Chapter 6 concert in case of rain.
Steve Wakefield, high school assistant soccer coach, is arranging an alumni soccer match, Beyers said.
The group that re-enacted a World War II field camp, or bivouac, has told the committee that it prefers to do the
event only every other year. It re-enacted the camp at last year’s celebration.
In another matter, Trustee Mark Esker said engineers told him to put down oil and chip where streets in one
subdivision have cracked sealing. He also described a method termed “roscoe” where oil is shot down, with
rock poured on top. He said he would check around to see if the village could use the machinery necessary.
Esker said he has discussed with staff getting out and cleaning up things like entrance pipes.
Patterson said her committee would meet to review an application from Dave Mayes for the Downtown
Improvement Project.
The Web design is completed, Patterson said, and work on content is taking place now. The redesigned site is
expected to go on line around April 1. The board voted to donate $250 to the Sports Boosters dinner-dance
benefit Saturday night. (From Feb. 12, 2009 edition)

Annual WIU Jazz Festival
The Williamsville High School Jazz Band competed at the 36th annual Western Illinois University Jazz Festival
Saturday in Macomb. The Bullet Jazz Band not only won the Class AA first place trophy, but once again, just as

(also Wisconsin, Missouri and Iowa). In Class AA, Williamsville won with 89 points, cruising to the title and well
ahead of Downs Tri-Valley (72.33) and Hoopeston Area (71.00). The only schools to finish with a better score
than WHS were three Class AAAA schools (the biggest schools). Among the largest schools that WHS
outscored were Davenport Central (Iowa) and Bolingbrook, Moline and Bartonville Limestone from Illinois. WHS
junior Matt Osman (bass) was awarded the Outstanding Jazz Soloist of the Small School Division (Class A and
AA). Kyle Traeger (trombone), Nick VanMeter (trumpet) and Osman (bass) were all given Outstanding Jazz
Performer Certificates in Class AA. This is the second year in a row that Williamsville brought home the top two
trophies from the event.

WHS senior Kurt Fowler
named to 2009 IHSA All-
State Academic Team
The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) is proud to announce
the 26 students who have been selected to the 2008-09 All-State
Academic Team sponsored by Caterpillar. The 13 male and 13
female honorees of the IHSA’s top academic honor were chosen
from a group that included over 500 students throughout the state.
“This is a tremendous honor and I hope every student who was
nominated takes a great deal of pride in all that they have
accomplished,” said IHSA Executive Director Marty Hickman.
“These students are the embodiment of what it means to take
advantage of the entire high school experience. I am thankful to
Caterpillar for providing the All-State Academic Team platform to
honor and congratulate them.”
One of the 26 students was Williamsville senior Kurt Fowler.
Every IHSA member school was invited to nominate one female
student and one male student by the February deadline.
Nominees needed to possess a minimum 3.50 grade point
average on 4.0 scale after their seventh semester, have
participated in at least two IHSA-sponsored activities during each
of the last two years and demonstrated outstanding citizenship.
The nominations were evaluated by a committee made up of
IHSA principals, representatives of the Illinois Activities Directors
Association and representatives of the Illinois Athletic Directors
Association. One male winner and one female winner from each
of the seven IHSA Board of Directors Divisions were selected
initially, while the final 12 spots on the team were then rounded
out with at-large candidates from anywhere in the state. The All-
State Academic Team members will be honored at a banquet at
the DoubleTree Hotel in Bloomington on April 20.

Hawks, Bullets fare well at IPTT meet
The Williamsville Bullets and Riverton/Tri-City boys track teams sent a few representatives to the Illinois Prep Top Times
Indoor Classic Friday at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington. This meet is considered to be the unofficial indoor state
track meet. For the second consecutive meet, Williamsville sophomore shot putter Keith Williams eclipsed 50 feet (50-5) and
that effort earned him a fifth place medal. Riverton’s Justin Roberts placed ninth in the same event (48-5). In the 55 high
hurdles, Riverton’s Emmett Kilhoffer, a Tri-City Tornado, was eighth; Williamsville’s Jon Kent won his heat, but did not advance
to the finals. In the 400, WHS senior Jonathan Moos ran a personal indoor best (52.9 seconds) but missed a medal by an
agonizing .01 of a second. In the 800 relay, Kent, Moos, Troy Willis and John Gerding went into the meet with the last qualifying
meet out of 21 teams, but after a “spectacular race,” in the words of WHS coach Don Williams, shaved three seconds off their
qualifying time and finished in seventh place. (1:36.55).
