Thanks to the generosity of Williamsville
Junior High students, 3,132 cans were
collected in the canned food drive. The
breakfast/gum fundraisers were also a
success this year.  We made a total of $130 to
present to the Kumler Food Pantry to
purchase perishable goods.
Several of our students did their part this year
in bringing in food for the needy.  Thank you to
all of you!  The top 15 who traveled with Mr.
McQuality to the food pantry Monday were:

WHS jazz students perform at IMEA concert
Williamsville High School had students in each and every group at this year’s Illinois Music Educator’s
Association District 4 Jazz Festival held Nov. 15 at Chatham Glenwood H.S. Two concerts were held at the
high school auditorium in the late afternoon, following all morning/early afternoon rehearsals. Selected by
audition for the Jazz Band 4 were Kevin Walden (Tenor Sax), and Robert Konzelmann (Baritone Sax). (Kevin
was unable to attend due to sickness). Selected by audition for the Jazz Band 3 was Joseph Staats
(Trombone). Selected by audition for Jazz Band 2 were Colin Ryan (Trombone) and Matt Osman (Bass).  
Selected by audition to perform in this year’s top group Jazz Band 1 were Marisa DeLay (Trumpet), Nicholas
VanMeter (Trumpet) and Kyle Traeger (Trombone). Selected to perform in the All-District Jazz Choir were WHS
students Chantel Jennings (Soprano), Jessica Miller (Soprano), Emily Neuman (Soprano), and Taylor Smith
(Soprano).  Alto vocalists chosen were Katie Barrett, Cora Jeffers, Kathryn Spenn, Kelsey Stump and Ellyn
Thorson. Tenor vocalists selected included Will Heidorn and Jacob Laughhunn. Bass vocalist selected was
Jacob Grieme. The students had outstanding concerts held at 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. in the Glenwood High
School Auditorium. This was an “outstanding showing” by WHS, according to music teacher Dave Pruitt.

take a position with Sherman. Barnett has resided in

Bullets whip Wildcats, Warriors
Brandon Donnelly had 19 points and missed only two of his 10 field goal attempts, and Josh Gentile added a
dozen more as the visiting Williamsville boys basketball team cruised past host Mt. Olive 76-53 Saturday night.
Travis Combs finished with 10 points and six rebounds, and Trevor Thompson contributed eight points, eight
boards, five steals and four assists. Derek Borjon finished with nine points and Nick Horton chipped in eight
points and six assists. WHS led 19-12 after one period, then extended the bulge to 36-19 by intermission and
55-36 by the end of the third period.
Tuesday, WHS drilled Athens 59-33 after running out to a 19-4 lead after eight minutes. Combs had 14 points
and nine rebounds to lead the way, and Donnelly finished with 10 points and five dimes.  Gentile scored seven
and Borjon and Thompson had six each.
Bullets claim New Berlin crown
Brandon Donnelly and Travis Combs both were within striking distances of double-doubles, and the
Williamsville Bullets boys basketball team won the Gene Bergschneider New Berlin Turkey Tournament Monday
night with a 57-49 win over the host Pretzels. Donnelly had 17 points and seven rebounds, while Combs (three
blocks) finished with 12 points and nine boards for the Bullets (5-0), who trailed 28-26 at the half but led 40-37
heading into the final period. Josh Gentile (four steals) contributed 10 and Nick Horton nine for WHS, which
plays next Saturday at Mt. Olive.
Last Tuesday, WHS whipped Rushville 61-40 after racing to a 20-8 lead after eight minutes.
Donnelly led the way with 16 markers, four more than Combs. Trevor Thompson (seven) and Gentile combined
for 13 more points. Combs had six rebounds and five steals, while Horton contributed five rebounds and four
steals. Donnelly (three steals) and Gentile both dished out four assists. Against Hillsboro Friday, WHS won
57-40 behind 15 from Donnelly and 13 from Combs. Gentile (nine), Thompson (eight) and Horton (eight) all
were knocking on the door of double-figure scoring nights.
Gentile had seven rebounds, while Donnelly, Thompson and Combs all had four. Donnelly had five steals, two
more than Thompson.
Saturday, WHS cruised past the Routt Rockets 69-46 on the strength of strong second (24-12) and fourth (22-12)
quarters. Donnelly pumped in 25 points while dishing out eight assists and having five steals. Combs had a
double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds, and Gentile and Thompson both chipped in seven points.

title

WJH 7th graders advance
to County title game
Adam Watson scored 12 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter
and overtime, and the Williamsville seventh grade boys
basketball team eked out a 44-38 double overtime win over
Auburn Monday in the semifinals of the Sangamon County
Tournament. WJH will play Pleasant Plains in the title game
Saturday at 11:15 a.m. at Divernon. Williamsville led for much
of the first half, but trailed by six going into the final quarter of
play. Ozzie Kent chipped in eight for the Bee Bees.
On Friday, WJH romped past Pawnee 51-22 as 11 players
dented the scoring column. Watson and Kent both had eight
points.
The eighth graders played Auburn in the first round of the
county.
They led 10-7 after one period and were tied at the half, but the
Bee Bees trailed 21-16 after three periods. A late rally fell just
short and WJH lost 31-29. Clinton Fletcher tossed in 14 points,
while Ryan McCormick had six and Kyle Jones five.
Williamsville Junior High School’s theme for
the 2008-2009 year is “Decide to be Better.”
Each month of the school year is dedicated to
a character trait. In August and September
students learned about making positive
choices and being accountable for the
choices they make. October’s character trait
was respect. The following students have
been recognized as Student of the Week at
Williamsville Junior High School during the
first quarter: Connor Thompson, Katie
Naslund, Jacob Shiffer, MacKenzie McCall,
Zach Wilham, Kylie Walsh, Katie Sweeney

Burneson named W-ville
Student of the Month
Williamsville High School is pleased to announce that senior Erin
Burneson has been selected as the October Student of the
Month.  Erin was selected by the senior class sponsors on the
basis of academic performance, extracurricular participation and
personal traits. Erin will receive a $100 savings bond from the
Williamsville State Bank and will also be eligible for Student of
the Year. Erin is 26th in her class with a GPA of 4.194.    Erin is a
Honor Roll student and is a member of the WHS chapter of the
National Honor Society.  Erin is a participant in many of the
extracurricular programs offered at WHS.  She is a strong
member of the WHS drama program, earning the lead role in
“South Pacific” and a major role in “High School Musical.”  She
also is very active in community theater outside of WHS.   As part
of the Madrigal singing ensemble, Erin helped create the script
for the 2008 season.  She is the co-founder and current leader of
REACH, a Christian outreach program at WHS.  She is also a
member of the Art Club, where she can further use her
outstanding art skills.  She has won the Gold Key and Silver Key
in the Scholastic Art competitions.  She has also won second
place in the “Vision of Race Unity” art contest. Helping others with
her exceptional leadership skills and positive attitude is extremely
important to Erin.  She was recently honored with the Junior
League of Springfield’s Outstanding Community Service Award.  
She has donated her time to the Inner City Mission, St. John’s
Hospital’s Adult Day Care program and the Springfield Muni
Opera.  She has also volunteered at Vacation Bible School at the
Williamsville Christian Church and completed mission trips to
Colorado, Mexico and Canada. Erin plans to earn a degree in
International Development and pursue a career as a missionary
in a cross-cultural environment.

W-ville board votes to buy
house, tear it down

The Williamsville Village Board voted 3-2 Monday to buy a house
at Harpole and Walnut streets, the price not to exceed $95,000.
The issue became controversial in the last few months. (

Mrs. Ashbaugh’s second grade class at
Sherman Elementary School collected items
for the less fortunate this holiday season.  We
had a “giving tree” in our classroom and the
children brought in items to put under our
tree.  They are pictured with the 71 non-
perishable food items for the Central Illinois
Food Bank, the 16 new toys for Toys For Tots
and the 20 pairs of mittens and hats for the
Mini O’Beirne Crisis Nursery that they
collected.

Parents of teens needed for Triangle Center focus
group
We all know that it is difficult to be a teenager in today’s society, with the abundance of media and peer
influences, as well as academic, athletic and social pressures that they endure.  Triangle Center Prevention
Staff is hosting a parent focus group to gain insight on issues facing teens today.  
The focus group will be held Jan. 15 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.  Refreshments will be served and each participant will
be awarded $40 for his/her input. Get paid to be part of something that will impact your entire community.  If you

Knights of Columbus International Free Throw
Championship at WHS Jan. 17
The Knights of Columbus, St. John Vianney Council 14024, would like to announce a local Council Level
Competition of the Knights of Columbus International Free Throw Championship to be held at Williamsville High
School practice gym Jan. 17 from 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.  All boys and girls ages 10 to 14 are invited to
participate. This is a competition sponsored annually, with winners progressing through local, district and state
competitions.  All contestants will receive a Certificate of Participation.  Winners will receive an engraved award
plaque to be presented during halftime at a future Williamsville High School basketball game. For entry forms or

Pelc named Williamsville Student of the Month
Williamsville High School is pleased to announce that senior Samantha Pelc has been selected as the
December Student of the Month. Samantha was selected by the senior class sponsors on the basis of
academic performance, extracurricular participation and personal traits.  Samantha will receive a $100 savings
bond from the Williamsville State Bank and will also be eligible for Student of the Year. Samantha is fourth in her
class with a GPA of 5.02.  She is an Illinois State Scholar, a member of the High Honor Roll, the PSAE All
Exceeds Team, Who’s Who Among American High School Students, the United States Achievement Academy of
Who’s Who in Speech and Drama, the United States Achievement Academy of Who’s Who in Leadership and
the WHS chapter of the National Honor Society. Samantha is currently serving as President of the National
Honor Society and is in her fourth year of serving as President of her class. Samantha has been very involved in
extracurricular activities.  She is a member of the Youth & Government program and is currently serving as the
Editor of the program’s newspaper.  She is also involved with the WHS Drama Productions, Homecoming Court,
Yearbook Committee and The Chamber.   She is a member of the Lady Bullets golf and softball teams, as well
as a co-ed indoor soccer team.  During her senior year, Samantha served as captain of the girls’ golf team
which enjoyed a very successful year, finishing seventh in the IHSA State Finals.  Samantha has volunteered as
a Vacation Bible School counselor, at the Rail Golf Course, as a staff member for Snowflake and Snowflurry, at
WJHS basketball and softball camps and at the WHS Teen Gift and Community Food Drive.  She has also
helped staff concession stands for the WHS Holiday Tournament, NHS Induction Ceremony, Junior Class Prom
fundraising and the After Prom Committee. After graduation, Samantha plans to earn a degree in Pre-Med and
further her education in the field of Optometry.
