Sherman receives HSD grant
The Village of Sherman Emergency Management Agency (EMA)
hosted a training session for area public safety officials in the
use of the Homeland Security Comprehensive Assessment
Model (HLS-CAM) equipment and software in June. The HLS-
CAM is a comprehensive assessment that defines a community,
evaluates a community’s strengths and weaknesses, identifies
critical infrastructure and key resources, identifies the threats to
the community, prioritizes infrastructure and resources and
provides a comprehensive vulnerability assessment. In 2007 the
Village of Sherman applied through a Commercial Equipment
Direct Assistance Program (CEDAP) federal grant for the HLS-
CAM system.  This system includes approximately $32,275 of
equipment and training.  The equipment includes a laptop
computer, HLS software, digital camera, digital range finder, tools
and storage bags.  The HLS-CAM training course is a three-day
course that provides the participants with a working knowledge of
the HLS-CAM process. It also provides the tools necessary for the
student to use the HLS-CAM model in their particular community
in conjunction with their jurisdictional expertise and encourages
various disciplines from the community to work together. Mayor
Trevor Clatfelter indicated that the Village appreciates receiving
the grant and “looks forward to Sherman first responders, as well
as our neighboring public safety agencies, in utilizing state-of-the-
art technologies in preparing our communities to be safer places
to live.” The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS)
awarded $33.7 million to fund equipment and training for first
responders across the nation as a part of the fiscal year 2007
Commercial Equipment Direct Assistance Program (CEDAP).
Since the program’s inception in 2005, DHS has provided roughly
5,800 direct assistance awards worth more than $103 million.

Lady Bee Bees edged by Beecher at state

An unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning proved to be the difference Friday as the Beecher Ladycats
edged the Williamsville Lady Bee Bees 2-1 in the quarterfinals  of the Illinois Elementary School Association
state tournament at Champion Fields in Normal. Williamsville, which finished 26-5, hit the ball hard all game,
but only managed three hits as many of its shots found the defense of Beecher, which lost in the title game 2-0
to Mattoon in 10 innings Saturday.
“I was happy with the way we hit the ball, but what it comes down to is that they made more plays than we did,”
said Williamsville coach Jess Buttry. “I am not sure the better team won today, but they were a solid fundamental
team.”
Beecher scored in the first, though the ball made it no further than a few feet into the grass in left field after a
bloop single. Williamsville’s first runner came in the fourth, when Emma Havrilka crushed a double to the fence
in right center with two outs, but Sydney Dees was retired on a grounder.
Beecher got a one-out double and then a runner on after a dropped third strike (though it appeared that Dees
caught the ball before it hit the dirt), but Hayley Long worked out of the jam with a strikeout and 9-3 putout as
Clair Stoecker cut down the runner at first base to end the threat. Long doubled and Jordan French bunted for a
single to start the fifth, then the pair pulled off a double steal to knot the score. But the next three hitters were
retired as French was stranded. Brandi Donnelly walked and stole second in the sixth; Dees’ two-out screamer
to center field was snared. An error started the bottom half of the sixth, then a pair of fielder’s choices preceded a
sacrifice fly. Williamsville was retired 1-2-3 in the seventh. Long fanned four and did not issue a free pass in the
tough-luck loss.

Wildcats knock Bullets out of playoff hunt
Adam Osmoe and Paul Rademacher combined for 301 yards and five touchdowns as the host Mt. Olive Wildcat
football team defeated Williamville 34-13 Friday in Prairie State Conference action. The loss dropped WHS to 2-5
and knocked them out of the playoff chase. The Wildcats (6-1) scored the first 27 points of the game.
Williamsville did not get on the board until the final minute of the third stanza, when Austin Stake scored on a
1-yard run. Nick Horton added the PAT. Josh Gentile found Travis Combs on a 19-yard TD pass in the final
minute of the contest. Gentile, who led the Bullets with 41 yards rushing, finished 13-for-22 with 194 yards and
two interceptions. Combs caught seven passes for 79 yards, and Brandon Donnelly had 111 yards receiving on
five catches. Troy Willis and Alex Smith both had 17 tackles to pace the defense; Stake finished with 14 stops,
and Colton Meyers, Trevor Wolf and Combs all had 10 tackles. Jon Kent contributed nine stops and Jeremy
Bailey and Cole Withrow both added eight. The Bullets end the season with two home dates, vs. Riverton and
Girard.

Statebound: Lady Bullets
win Aledo golf sectional
It was a long trip that included a flat tire on the way back, but
the Williamsville Lady Bullets girls golf team won its first trophy
Monday at the IHSA Class A Aledo Girls Golf Sectional. The
Lady Bullets, led by senior Samantha Pelc, who shot 87, won
the sectional with 373 strokes, a half-dozen shots better than
Sangamo rival Petersburg PORTA.
“Samantha really came through for us today,” said coach
Carissa Szoke. “She picked a good time to really bring up her
game.”
Katelyn Lazar shot 89, Lexie Emerson 92 and Hannah Miller
105. Last year, Williamsville finished eighth at state, but had
never finished first in the regional or sectional.
Last Wednesday, PORTA won the Rushville Regional by a
dozen shots over the Lady Bullets (373-385). Brooks White,
who also won medalist honors at the sectional by six shots,
edged past Chelsea Nichols by one shot (86-87) to earn
medalist honors. Emerson shot 94, Miller 100 and Pelc 104 to
round out the top four. Williamsville heads south for the
weekend; the state tournament will be at Carbondale’s Hickory
Ridge Golf Course.
