Sherman’s Murgatroyd appointed Area Chair of State Committee
The Honorable James Rebholz, Chairman National Committee for the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, recently confirmed the
appointment of Dr. Michael Ayers of Springfield, to serve as Chair of the Illinois Committee. Dr. Ayers is the Executive Vice President of the Illinois
Chamber of Commerce, and resides with his wife, Ruth Ann, in Springfield.
Following his appointment, Dr. Ayers made several key selections within the State Committee.
One of those appointments was Sherman’s Colonel Tom Murgatroyd (ret.), who has been selected to serve as the Area Chair for the central and
eastern regions of Illinois. This area includes Decatur, Champaign-Urbana, and the surrounding area. Colonel Murgatroyd retired from the United
States Air Force in 2008 after 38 years of military service in the United States Air Force and the Air National Guard. In his last assignment, he served
as Air National Guard Advisor for Logistics and Aircraft Maintenance to Air Mobility Command Headquarters, overseeing readiness of more than 500
aircraft at 42 Air National Guard locations nationwide.
Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) is a Department of Defense agency established in 1972. The mission of ESGR is to gain and
maintain employer support for Guard and Reserve service by recognizing outstanding support, increasing awareness of the law, and resolving
conflicts through mediation. ESGR volunteers provide free education, consultation and if necessary mediation for employers of Guard and Reserve
employees. The Illinois ESGR committee numbers over 150 volunteers.
As the 1.2 million members of the National Guard and Reserve continue to perform an increasing number of unique missions that require
extraordinary actions on the part of everyday citizens, ESGR will continue to be the informational agency for the employers of America’s Patriots. More
information about ESGR Employer Outreach Programs and volunteer opportunities is available at www.esgr.mil, or call the Illinois Committee at 217-

Lady Bullets win Riverton Early Bird Review
Sami Dees and Lauren Hollinshead both scored eight points and the Williamsville Lady Bullets girls basketball team won the Riverton Early Bird
Review Saturday night with a 34-27 win over St. Joseph-Ogden. Kathryn Spenn had six points and Tamara Abu-Tayeh and Jessie McEvoy both
had four for WHS, which trailed 5-3 after a quarter but led 15-9 at intermission and 24-16 after three periods.
“It was nice to get the experience of playing in a championship game,” said WHS coach Jon Hampton. “SJ-O will be one of the best defensive
teams we see all season. The girls showed a lot of mental toughness to be able to jump out to a lead and hold it the entire game against an
opponent of SJ-O’s caliber.”
Friday, WHS clinched its pool play title with a suffocating defensive performance in a 36-26 win over previously unbeaten Mt. Zion. Mt. Zion did not
reach double digits until late in the third period, and though the Lady Braves made a late charge, WHS held on. Dees had a double-double with 11
points and 10 rebounds, while Hollinshead scored eight points and McEvoy and Spenn (seven rebounds) both had five points. Kelsey Easton had
four assists. WHS led 13-4 after one period and 16-7 at the break. After Mt. Zion scored 34 seconds into the third quarter, the Lady Bullets scored
eight in a row, four from Hollinshead and four from Taylor Edwards, to stretch the lead to 15.
It was 26-14 after three quarters.
“We played with alot of intensity and sense of urgency after dropping the Virginia game,” said Hampton. “The team defense was outstanding and
we took care of the ball much better than we did the rest of the tournament. This was a good win vs. a 3A opponent.”
WHS suffered a 37-31 loss to Virginia/A-C Central last Wednesday, despite leading 23-21 after three quarters.
Spenn tossed in nine points (and had seven rebounds) and Dees and Hollinshead both had eight for the Lady Bullets, who played Rochester
Tuesday night after press time. Amy Pesch dished out five assists.
Bullets win Gene Bergschneider title
By Byron Painter
Editor
The Williamsville Bullets boys basketball team scored nine of the first 11 points of the game, then withstood a West Central charge in the second
half to post a 49-42 win in the finals of the Gene Bergschneider New Berlin Turkey Tournament Saturday night.
It was the third straight title at New Berlin for the Bullets (4-0), who gave new coach Bryon Graven his first-ever tournament title as a coach.
Williamsville led 11-4 after one stanza, and after the Cougars opened the second period with a triple, the Bullets rattled off 10 of the next 13 points
to build a 21-10 lead.
Brad Wagner started the run with a triple and Josh Gentile punctuated the spurt with another.
Travis Combs, who like Wagner and Gentile made the all-tournament team, scored on a putback in the waning seconds to put WHS up 23-12 at
intermission.
WHS blitzed the Cougars early in the third with a 9-2 run, Wagner scoring five and Gentile and Nick Roscetti scoring in transition.
But like the night before against Girard, WHS had a letdown and let its opponent creep back into the game.
“We played well in the first half, but we had a little bit of a lull in the third quarter,” said Graven. “We have to figure out a way to keep them intense
(all the time).”
The youth of the team, with as many as three sophomores on the floor at a time, showed at times, Graven admitted.
Roscetti nailed a 3 to put WHS up 35-19, but the Cougars scored the last six points of the quarter to get within 10.
The Bullets led 41-27 after a Gentile deuce at the 6:04 mark, then WC rallied again, this time with a 13-3 spurt to pull within 44-40 with 2:07 left.
Gentile scored at the 1:39 mark, and after a WC turnover, Wagner put the game out of reach with a 3-point play with 48.8 seconds left.
Wagner had 15 points, two more than Gentile, while Roscetti had eight. Combs had seven points to go along with nine rebounds, four steals and
three blocks.
Graven was pleased with how his team responded, though he wished the Bullets had played a bit slower.
“We were playing too fast (in the fourth quarter),” he said. “We got a couple of turnovers and were lucky enough to make some shots.
“It is probably my fault, because I wanted to go for the throat and put the game away.”
Considering the Bullets got off to a late start because of the success of the football team, Graven was pleased to win the tournament.
“We still have not had 10 practices yet, and we have played four games and were kind of freelancing (at times),” he said, noting that the entire
offense had not been implemented.
