WHS students participate in Youth and Government
Williamsville High School students participated in the Illinois YMCA Youth and Government 60th Assembly March 20-22.  This year was a great
success, with 38 student delegates attending in various roles.  Sam Pelc served as editor of the Observer, overseeing a newspaper staff that
included several WHS students.  Many WHS students also served as legislators and lobbyists, working hard to get their legislation passed
through committee and in both houses of the Assembly. Two of their bills have been signed into law by the youth governor.  Chelsea Nichols
inspired her fellow delegates as Chaplain of the Senate, Adam Balder did a great job as Clerk of the House and Page Emily Mordacq served as
an election judge and helped keep information flowing throughout the capitol for the weekend.  Great job to all the students involved.  Thanks to
our volunteer advisors Mr. Gudwien, Mr. Kershaw and Mrs. Catlin, and thanks again to the parents, community members and all the village
boards for supporting our fundraising activities throughout the school year.  We are looking forward to the 61st Assembly in 2010.  If anyone would
like to know more about the program, please see the Web site: http://www.ilymcayg.org/about/ or contact Ms. Faloon-Sullivan:

WHS groups all gain Division I state IHSA
Superior Marks at contest
The Williamsville High School Mixed Chorus, Treble Chorus, Concert Band, Jazz Choir and Jazz
Band all competed in the 2009 I.H.S.A. State Organizational Music Contest held at Petersburg
PORTA High School April 3. All groups performed for three performance judges, and the concert
groups also had sight-reading in a room following their performance. This sight-reading room had
one judge.
The WHS groups have maintained straight Division I marks for several years. The WHS Music
Department is hoping to finish the year in the top 10 schools in State Class B of the IHSA (there
are over 130 schools in this class). The final state sweepstakes points and school department
rankings can be found on the IHSA Web site.  These results should be posted sometime in the
next 10 days. The Choirs and Bands have an upcoming concert May 7, in conjunction with the WHS
Art Department.  This will be their annual Fine Arts Concert. Details of this concert will appear in a
later edition of the paper.
Bullets hold off Pretzels
Kody Kirkpatrick had 26 points, including five 3-pointers, and Joel Burger 11, but the visiting
New Berlin Pretzels boys basketball team managed only two other points in a 44-39 loss to
Williamsville Friday in Prairie State Conference action. The host Bullets never trailed after early
in the second half and committed only five turnovers in the game. Josh Gentile paced
Williamsville with 19 points, including 4-for-5 3-pointers. He had 10 of his tallies in the final
eight minutes. Travis Combs had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and
Brandon Donnelly finished with nine points and five rebounds. The first period ended 9-9, and
Kirkpatrick’s 3 at the 3:04 mark of the second period was the last scoring in the half and lifted
the Pretzels to a 17-15 lead. It was his second triple of the period and helped Jon Barth’s team
erase a 15-11 deficit. A Combs stickback 2:01 into the third period put the Bullets up for good at
19-18. The WHS lead was as high as six in the stanza (32-26) after Trevor Thompson nailed a
3, and Williamsville took a 32-27 lead into the final eight minutes. The Bullets missed all three
of their bonus free throw front ends, and the Pretzels got within 37-35 with 2:34 left when
Kirkpatrick scored. But Gentile scored five points after that and Donnelly hit a pair of free throws
as the Bullets held on despite missing half of their 10 free throw attempts in the last 104
seconds.
Williamsville won the J-V game 54-34 behind 19 points from JJ Watson and 13 from Brad
Wagner.
Tuesday night the Bullets overcame a slow start and coasted past Girard 65-48. WHS trailed 13-
9 after eight minutes but rallied for a 33-26 halftime bulge. It was 49-37 after three periods.
Horton poured in 17 points to pace the Bullets, not missing in his eight field goal attempts.
Combs had another double-double with 10 tallies and 14 rebounds, and Donnelly chipped in
12 points and seven boards (six offensive). Nick Roscetti scored nine and Gentile seven.

Bullets whip Pawnee, PORTA, Riverton
The Williamsville Bullets boys basketball team picked up road wins Friday and Saturday by
double digits. Friday, the Bullets claimed a Prairie State Conference win at Pawnee 60-41, after
running out to a 16-6 lead after one period. WHS led 32-19 at the break and 45-25 heading into
the final stanza. Travis Combs finished 9-or-15 from the field and had 19 points and 10
rebounds. Brandon Donnelly (6-for-9 FG) added 17 points, and Josh Gentile and Nick Horton (4-
for-4 FG) both chipped in eight. Trevor Thompson dished out five assists and Gentile had five
steals.
Saturday, PORTA was the victim, 56-45. The Bullets ran out to a 21-11 lead after eight minutes,
then extended the advantage to 34-19 by intermission. Thompson nailed four 3-pointers and
paced the Bullets with 16 points, and he also led with four steals. Donnelly contributed 15,
Gentile 11 and Combs eight (with 11 rebounds).
Tuesday night, the Bullets rallied from a 12-8 deficit after one period and whipped the Riverton
Hawks 62-44. WHS outscored the Hawks 23-7 in the third period to add to a 29-23 halftime lead.
Donnelly scored 20 points and had seven boards for the Bullets, who also got 15 from
Thompson and nine points and 11 rebounds from both Horton (six assists) and Combs. Josh
Trader had 14 points and six boards for the Hawks, who were 18-for-42 from the field compared
to the Bullets’ 24-for-44. Mike Trader had 11 points and Justin Roberts five boards and six
points. Riverton won the J-V tilt 48-47, outscoring the Bullets 14-10 in the final stanza. Zach
Yoggerst had 17 and Connor Holliday 11 for the Hawks, while Brad Wagner had 14 and Nick
Roscetti 13 for the Bullets.

Knox re-elected W'ville school board president
David Knox will retain his position as Williamsville School Board president. The vote was 5-1, with Judy
Lazar voting no (re-elected board member Scott Stuewe participated by phone). The board met April 29
as a continuation of the regular April 20, with the sole purpose to reorganize and vote for new officers.
Retiring member Vicki Jenkins, who was vice president, will be replaced in that position by re-elected
member Jack Caldwell, who was approved 5-1 (Lazar no). Sandy Walden will remain secretary; that vote
was 6-0. No other members were put up for any of those positions. Caldwell will be president pro-tem in
case of Knox’s absence. Eric Long was seated in Jenkins’ old seat; Dave Lemme, who was honored
with Jenkins for their service, did not run, and no one has been appointed to fill that slot. There was
some discussion on the vacant seat, however.

Davidson wins IC campus leadership prize
Mckenzi Davidson from Sherman was awarded Illinois College’s top prize for campus leadership
during ceremonies April 26 on the hilltop campus. Davidson, who graduated May 10 with a major
in economics, was one of 10 seniors chosen by the liberal arts college to receive the 2009 Julian
Monson Sturtevant Campus Leadership Award. The award is named in honor of Illinois College’s
first instructor and second president who served the institution from 1844-76. Under Julian
Sturtevant’s guidance, Illinois College developed into one of the region’s leading liberal arts
colleges.  Malinda Carlson, vice president for student affairs and dean of students, said the
prestigious award calls attention to a select group of students who demonstrate active campus
service and leadership throughout their college careers. Davidson, a graduate of Williamsville
High School, is the daughter of Matt and Melanie Davidson of Sherman. In her four years at Illinois
College, she has been active in Outdoor Adventure Club, Student Alumni Association,
Homecoming Committee and has served as chair person and travel chair of the Student Activities
Board. Miss Davidson has received the Rammelkamp Honor Award and has been named to the
Dean’s List. She is a member Delta Mu Delta National Business Honor Society and was named
Student Marshal for the class of 2009.  She has also served as a Resident Assistant and Hall
Director.
Davidson was also among students at Illinois College recognized for academic excellence April
27 when the liberal arts college held its annual Honors Day Celebration.  Davidson was cited for
earning the Outstanding Departmental Contributions Award in the economics, accounting and
finance departments and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa Academic National Honor Fraternity.
The Outstanding Departmental Contributions Award is awarded to seniors who have displayed
overall academic excellence, leadership and service to the economics, accounting and finance
departments.
Phi Beta Kappa is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious honorary college society. It recognizes
the highest scholastic distinction by electing members from among the leading candidates for
college degrees in the liberal arts and sciences.
Congratulations to sixth graders Kelsey
Jones and Mitch Whitley, who scored perfect
grades on the Illinois Constitution Test this

Mitch will be honored for their achievement by
being given the opportunity to serve as a
page in the Illinois House of Representatives
during the fall veto session as a guest of
Representative Rich Brauer.  More than half
