Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central
Illinois and McGraw Enterprises awarded a
grant of $3,585 to Rochester Middle School
to purchase ActivClassroom technology. After
the RMS staff took technology courses
offered by the district last year, they found it
difficult to implement the technology in their
classrooms wihtout the proper tools. The
staff then developed a collaborative team to
pilot three ActivClassrooms where students
would be exposed to various technology
facets on a daily basis. With the district
forced to make cutbacks in many areas of the
budget, the staff looked to the Ronald
McDonald grant program. Taking part in the
grant presentation at RMS were, left to right:
Cindy Denby (RMH interim executive
director), Dona McGraw (McGraw Enterprises
owner), Randy Hawkins, Lyndsi Reid, Julie
Tinder and Megan Fox, representing the 5th
Grade Team, and Sheril Flynn (K-6
technology facilitator).

Lions Club donates $3,500 to arboretum
The Rochester Lions Club recently donated $3,500 toward development of the arboretum in Rochester Community
Park. Club president Louie Daugherty presented a check to arboretum committee members Dave Hicks and Harry
Hendrickson last week. Proceeds from the Lions Club’s Boo Crew Haunted House made the donation possible. The
arboretum will feature a great variety of trees and shrubs native to Illinois, and an outdoor classroom that will be
available for use by teachers, Scout groups and others is included in the design. Also included will be trails to allow
visitors to stroll through the area and see examples of many kinds of trees they might wish to utilize in their residential
landscapes. Plants that thrive in moist areas will be featured throughout the arboretum.
Development began with preliminary earth work being completed, at no charge, by Operating Engineers Local 965.
The area was seeded to minimize soil erosion and the planting of 30 trees was completed earlier in November by a
group of 26 volunteers that included Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. More plantings will be done next spring and fall. The
citizens commitee overseeing development of the project includes Hicks, Hendrickson, Carol Cross, Dennis
Ferguson, Molly Godar, Jerry Calvert and Glen Kruse. One of the committee’s primary responsibilities is to pursue
financial support for the addition to the park. Some of the grants applied for have already been approved, but since
some of the grants require matching funds, local residents are encouraged to add their financial support through tax-
deductible donations to the project fund.
Suggested levels of support for the arboretum are: Supporter (up to $50), Friend ($50), Patron ($100), Founder ($250),
Benefactor ($500) and Arborist ($1,000). For each $100 donation, the donor may name a person that will be included
on a list of sponsors, which will be displayed in the arboretum. A donation may be given as a living memorial to a
loved one or mentor. The arboretum fund should be clearly identified with all donations and sent to the Village of
Rochester, P.O. Box 618, Rochester, IL 62563. Donations can also be dropped off at the village office at 1 Community
Drive. For more information, call the village at 498-7192 or email to arboretum@rochesteril.org.

events on her journey to her niece Grace, played by Hailey Williams.
After being shipwrecked on one of her many travels, Edwina awakes aboard an unfamiliar ship, where she is nursed back to health by a mysterious man
named Montgomery (Keegan MacDonna) and his servant, M’Ling (Mark Heaton). Eventually, Edwina realizes that all is not well and when captain Davies
(Ramsey Miller) and his band of sailors turn against the three travelers, Edwina is forced to join Montgomery and M’Ling on an unnamed island. Soon,
Edwina meets Dr. Moreau (Ryan Heaton) and she discovers his many “experiments.” Unable to leave, she comes face to face with the dark, animalistic side
