Ground broken on new recycling facility
Riverton Mayor Bob Todd called a new recycling facility for Riverton a “win-win situation” Monday at the groundbreaking for the facility, just off Interstate 72 and Overpass
Road.
The 40,000 square foot facility is expected to ultimately bring 25 jobs to Riverton over the next couple of years.
Two state grants ($525,000 from the Development of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to the village and $380,000 in EDGE tax credits over a 10-year period to the
company, S.I.C. Recycling, to support job creation efforts) were awarded in the project, the former grant helping defray all of Riverton’s costs to extend utilities to the site (and
also equip the facility initially), which was recently annexed into the village and zoned commercial.
“The grant was imperative for us to make this happen,” said Todd after the groundbreaking, which featured dignitaries from the company and local Greater Springfield
Chamber of Commerce officials.
The facility will be owned by Sloan Implement Company (S.I.C.), a local farm implement dealer; the company purchased the land from Dowson Farms.
The uncle of Tom Sloan runs a similar-type recycling facility in Alabama. Tom’s brother Jim will be plant manager and Brady Bird, formerly of Chase Bank, will serve as
general manager.
“We are grateful for the cooperation and effort we have received from the Village of Riverton and everyone involved in this project,” said Bird. “S.I.C. Recycling looks
forward to being a part of this community and anticipates this partnership to be a rewarding one for all involved.”
The Sloan family also owns GSI, Inc., one of the world’s largest grain bin companies.
The facility, which will recycle and process non-ferrous materials (mainly copper and aluminum), will recycle those materials by grinding them and then selling them as
commodities to various users, like steel mills and metal fabricators.
Dirt work for the project will start immediately, and Tom Sloan hopes the facility will be operational in 6-7 months.
The recycling industry, according to Bird, contributed $77 billion to the U.S. economy in 2010 and created 110,000 jobs.
Materials to be recycled will come from around the Midwest, but retail products will not be bought and any guy who shows up with two radiators to recycle, for example,
will not be accepted, it was said.
Bird estimated that the facility will be at capacity in the second or third quarter of 2012, and two shifts will be used at the plant. It is expected to recycle about 13 million
pounds of scrap metal annually.
When queried about if road improvements will be needed to handle the truck traffic (no materials are expected to be brought in via rail), Tom Sloan noted that Conway
Trucking is right next door (and at more than one juncture of the ceremony, Conway trucks were heard rumbling past in the background).
There are about 25 semi loads of materials expected to be delivered every month, Jim Sloan said.
Todd and Trustee Rich Pottier both talked after the groundbreaking about the hopes they have for the interstate area, which also includes some 38 acres of land in the
Wanless Trust that the village is “marketing like the dickens,” in Pottier’s words.
“We hope this is the beginning of something, and we would really like to see some large commercial development,” said Todd, mentioning a convenience store
(especially with diesel fuel)/fast food-type facility as something that could ultimately end up there.
Being only five miles from Springfield could be a detriment, but both men said that, especially for agricultural and truck traffic, a stop at that exit could be much better than
having to go into the city of Springfield, as access to and from the interstate would be much easier.
“This project is a great opportunity for the Village of Riverton,” commented Pottier. “This facility will create jobs and increase revenue in our community. We welcome S.I.C.
Recycling, and look forward to a long and successful partnership with them.”
