Hakasaus continue to roll in league play, win Capital City Shootout
The Saus downed the Aftershock in a Tuesday night doubleheader last week, 17-1 and 13-0, to improve their league record to 5-1. In Game 1, Sherman’s Alex DeVaney gave
up a double to the leadoff hitter, who eventually scored, but she yielded only one more baserunner in the game in route to her seventh victory against four defeats.
Alex was supported by Williamsville classmates Julia O’Conner, Lindsay Pearson and Morgan Higginbotham, as they combined for five hits, seven runs and six RBI. Riverton’
s Megan Aubuchon and Pleasant Plains’ Kylee Kabeah each tagged two hits each to round out the hit attack. Riverton’s Alyssa Koger and Lainy Lamkey did not net an at-bat,
but did contribute three walks, three runs, two RBI and a sacrifice in the win.
The Hakasaus continued to roll in Game 2 as Kabeah allowed only two hits while striking out three in a four-inning shutout. O’Conner was perfect from the plate with three
singles while Maddie Rockford (Springfield) contributed a double and two RBI. Riverton’s Morgan Heckman had a one-hit evening, but still produced three runs and two RBI.

Aubuchon went three for four with three RBI, three runs, a double and a triple to lead the Riverton-Sherman 12U Hakasaus’ to a 8-3 victory over the AXA Force in the
Championship of the Capital City Shootout. The victory marked the Saus’ ninth in a row and 16th win in the last 17 games. The game also avenged the Hakasaus’ last loss
which came at the hands of AXA, 6-5. in league play last month.
Riverton-Sherman won the 16-team double elimination tournament by going undefeated on the weekend, which included seven wins in three days. Kabeah notched the victory
with a six-inning two-hit complete game. Pearson also drilled two hits and had one RBI.
In Game 1 of the Capital City Shootout, the Saus capitalized on strong hitting and timely pitching to down the Belleville Southern Illinois Sting 10-0. DeVaney picked up her
eighth win of the season by striking out six and allowing one hit in four innings. All Saus hit safely in the game, but Aubuchon, Kabeah and Higginbotham all had two hits each
and scored a combined five runs. Koger and Heckman each contributed a single and a pair of RBI. The win advanced the Saus to the Championship Game of Pool D against
Clinton Gold.
In the Pool D Championship, the Saus offense once again rolled as they tagged the Gold for five runs in the first inning and went on to win 11-0. DeVaney fanned the first nine
batters of the game and yielded only a bunt single to claim the victory. She ended the game with 10 Ks and two walks. Aubuchon and Higginbotham each slammed triples to
the fence and collected a combined five hits in the game.
The Pool D Championship landed the Saus a top four seed in the double elimination tournament and an opening round game against the Small Town Sluggers from Auburn.
The Saus hit early and often as they pounded out 16 hits in three innings of play. Aubuchon, Kabeah, Higginbotham, Koger and O’Conner all garnished multiple hit games.
Pearson, Lamkey and Rockford all contributed one hit each while combining for four runs and four RBI. Kabeah collected her fifth win of the summer in the victory by striking out
six and walking only one.
The Hakasaus advanced into the semifinals in the nightcap with a 14-4 win over one of the tourney favorites, the Romeoville Starzz. The Saus jumped the Starzz for five runs in
the first and six tallies in the third to pull away for the victory. A trio of Bee Bees and a lone Hawk led the offense with 10 combined hits by Higginbotham, O’Conner, Pearson
and Koger. Lamkey, Rockford, Heckman and Kabeah also drilled a knock each to round out the hit parade. DeVaney (10-4) picked up her second win of the day and third of the
tournament in a gutty performance. She struck out six and scattered six hits.
Game 5 of the tournament faced the Hakasaus against an out-of-state foe, the Missouri Outlaws. The Outlaws never had a hit out of the infield nor did the Saus allow a walk,
but nonetheless the visitors from the Show-Me State lit up the scoreboard for three runs in the first to take an early lead. The Outlaws followed with two more runs in the second
inning to take a 5-0 edge over the Hakasaus into the bottom of the inning. Riverton-Sherman continued to chip away at the lead until it finally scored the tying run in the fifth
inning as Lamkey scored on a Kabeah single. The time limit had lapsed at the end of the fourth inning, forcing the game into an international tiebreaker. Kabeah, who replaced
DeVaney in relief, pitched out of a bases-loaded one-out jam in the top of the fifth to keep the score knotted at five all. In the bottom of the inning, O’Conner advanced from
second to third on a Koger single before crossing the plate with the winning run on a Rockford rope to leftfield. This come-from-behind victory assured the Saus a top three
finish in the tournament and a trip to the finals of the single elimination bracket.
In the finals of the single elimination bracket, the Saus faced off against the undefeated Lincoln Chill. They once again jumped on their opponent in the first inning for two runs
and added tallies in the third, fourth and sixth inning to take a 7-0 lead in the final frame. The Chill attempted a rally, but fell short as DeVaney slammed the door for her 11th
victory of the season. DeVaney struck out seven, walked one and allowed only two hits in her seven-inning effort.
Lincoln had a chilling effect on the Hakasau offense, which was held to a tournament-low five hits on the game. Heckman led the offense with two hits and two RBI, while
Higginbotham, Pearson and Lamkey tagged the Chill for the other base wraps.
The Saus (22-6) outscored opponents in the tournament 72-18 while allowing only 21 hits.
