RHS receives Teen Safe Driving grant from IDOT
Riverton High School has received a grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Division of Traffic Safety (IDOT/DTS) through the Operation Teen Safe Driving
(OTSD) program. This program awards $2000 to selected schools for the students to develop and implement a safe driving campaign in their community.
This is the second year RHS was chosen to compete with other schools in their region for additional prize money to be used to host a safe afterprom party. In addition to
the after prom support, students from winning schools will have the opportunity to participate in Ford’s Driving Skills for Life. Ford brings in professional drivers and takes
students through obstacle courses that teach them how to handle the vehicle in the event of a slide, how to maneuver sharp corners, make quick decisions and overall
increase their driving skills.
Thanks to IDOT/DTS, the Allstate Foundation and the Ford Motor Company for the opportunity for the students of Riverton to educate the community on dangers of
drinking and driving, texting while driving and the importance of wearing their safety belts.
In the upcoming months, the students will be asking local businesses to help spread the message. Riverton residents can expect to see students out in the community
encouraging drivers to make important safety decisions while driving. This grant is important because it gives RHS the opportunity to reach out to students, parents and all of
Riverton in hopes that at least one life is saved.
Remember, wearing your safety belt every trip every time decreases your chances of being killed or seriously injured in a crash. The safety belt is designed to keep all
passengers in their seats, preventing them from being ejected. It is also designed to help the passenger ride down the crash force. Your safety belt is your best defense
against an impaired or distracted driver. Starting Jan. 1, 2012 all passengers, regardless of age or seating position, is required to wear a safety belt or be in a proper child
restraint.
Remember that your driving behaviors affect everyone. Don’t Drink and Drive. Don’t drive In-TEXT-icated and Buckle Up.
