Lady Bullets end Lady Hawks' season
Sami Dees pumped in 17 points off the bench, and the fourth-seeded Williamsville Lady Bullets girls basketball team cruised past fifth-seeded Riverton 58-38 Monday night in
the quarterfinals of the Class 2A Pleasant Plains Regional.
Williamsville (20-9) played the host Lady Cardinals Wednesday night after press time; the Lady Hawks finish their campaign at 12-17.
Lauren Hollinshead had 13 points and six boards for the Lady Bullets, who were 24-for-50 from the floor and forced 26 Riverton turnovers. Cora Jeffers scored 12 points.
Emily Maulding was the lone Riverton player in double figures with 14 markers. Kate Blissett added eight and Sarah Green, one of three seniors playing her last game, had six
points and four boards.
Riverton finished 14-for-32 from the floor and forced 16 WHS turnovers.
The Lady Bullets never trailed, and there was only one tie, at 2-2.
A 6-0 spurt put Williamsville up 8-2 on its way to a 16-6 lead after one period.
The lead reached 12 early in the second quarter, then a 6-0 Riverton run, with two buckets from Maulding and one from Blissett, got the Lady Hawks within 21-15.
But Williamsville finished the half on a 9-2 run, with four points from Dees and Hollinshead, to take a 30-17 halftime lead.
Four quick points from Maulding pulled Riverton within single digits, then the Lady Bullets responded with five in a row, and they led 42-28 after three quarters.
“Everything fell apart” after Riverton got within six, noted coach Jeff Koger. “We tried to speed the tempo up and we could not recover.
“They play so hard and they play with tenacity, and some of our girls cannot play like that.”
The up-and-down nature of the season wore a bit on Koger.
“We were in position to beat some good teams, but we never could finish a game,” he said. RHS finished with a better record than last year, but lost six games by four points or
less or in overtime.
On the flip side, Koger’s Williamsville counterpart is pleased with the way his team has been playing.
“This team is really listening, focused and playing with a great deal of energy entering the postseason,” said a pleased WHS coach Dave Urish. “We are extremely proud of
how these girls have competed the second half of this season.”
The WHS lead reached as high as 22 in the final stanza.
