Riverton's Durham wins photography award
The Illinois Association of Skills USA held its 45th annual Leadership and Skills Conference in Springfield on April 23-25. The conference Leadership and skill events were
held at the Prairie Capital Convention Center, the Capital Area Career Center, the President Abraham Lincoln Hotel, Robert Morris College and the Springfield Hilton Hotel. The
nearly 1500 registered participants are supported by an additional nearly 300 business and industry organized labor and educational professionals who will supervise and
judge the competition and provide technical support.
The students participated in several different types of contests as in leadership development contests, skilled and technical sciences contests and several health contests,
action skills contests for special needs students and occupationally-related contests.
Skills USA is a national, state, regional and local organization for technical, skilled health and personal service occupations students in high school and college. Students can
win awards and ribbons for their hard success and hard work of what they really like to do.
The conference activities opened with a recognition ceremony and guest speakers April 23. On April 24, the competitive events were held during the day followed by the social
in the evening the activities conclude with a special awards ceremony on the morning of April 25. The winners received gold, silver and bronze medallions as symbols of their
achievement. These students have won medallions for their hard work and skill from the competition:
--Jennifer Weddle (Auburn) ranked second place in Creative Digital Photography
--Celeste Durham (Riverton) placed first place in Creative Photography Color
--Kristian Rigoni (Chatham Glenwood) ranked sixth place and received a ribbon for Food and Beverage Service
--Craig Ross (Springfield Lutheran) placed third place in graphic communications
--Duane Craig (Riverton) ranked second place in the Heating, V.A. & Refrigeration Class
--Ryan Stalets (Springfield Lutheran) placed first place for his hard work and skills in the internetworking class
--Jennifer Weddle won first place for her hard work in the photography class
--McKenzie Ward (Springfield High) and Brian McKenzie (Southeast) both placed second place for Audio/Radio Production
--Della Kitselman (Franklin) received fifth place for Commercial Baking.
Weddle and Stalets will go on to compete at the Skills USA National Leadership Conference during the last week of June in Kansas City, Mo.
