Vikings slip past Hawks

The Riverton Hawks boys basketball team could not sustain a hot-shooting start and eventually lost to Downs Tri-Valley 48-44 Saturday morning at the Riverton Subway
Shootout.
The Hawks put up 19 points in the first period, including 3-pointers from Josh Trader and Mike Trader, and led 19-16 after one stanza.
But the Hawks went scoreless for 5:27 of the second period as the Vikings rallied for a 30-28 halftime bulge.
The Vikings actually led 30-23 at one point before Mike Trader nailed a 3 and then he hit two freebies with 2.4 seconds left in the half.
The Hawks did not commit a turnover in the third period and outscored the Vikings 10-8; Josh Trader had six points in the stanza, including a free throw with 5.8 seconds left
that knotted the score at 38.
However, Riverton did not score again until Zach Yoggerst hit a 12-foot jumper from the wing with 1:12 left; Tri-Valley led 44-40 after the bucket.
Gabe Cripe helped seal the win for Tri-Valley with four free throws in the last 44.3 seconds.
Riverton had only five turnovers in the game, but shot only 15-for-53 from the field. Josh Trader tossed in 17 points and Mike Trader had 12. Spencer Pulliam finished with six
points and four assists.
Tri-Valley was 17-for-36 from the floor and outrebounded the Hawks 25-20.

Tuesday night, the Williamsville Bullets rallied from a 12-8 deficit after one period and whipped the Hawks 62-44.
WHS outscored the Hawks 23-7 in the third period to add to a 29-23 halftime lead.
Brandon Donnelly scored 20 points and had seven boards for the Bullets, who also got 15 from Trevor Thompson and nine points and 11 rebounds from both Nick Horton (six
assists) and Travis Combs.
Josh Trader had 14 points and six boards for the Hawks, who were 18-for-42 from the field compared to the Bullets’ 24-for-44.
Mike Trader had 11 points and Justin Roberts five boards and six points.
Riverton won the J-V tilt 48-47, outscoring the Bullets 14-10 in the final stanza.
Yoggerst had 17 and Connor Holliday 11 for the Hawks, while Brad Wagner had 14 and Nick Roscetti 13 for the Bullets.

Last Thursday, the J-V boys lost to Warrensburg 42-36 after getting outscored 12-6 in the final stanza.
The Cardinals led 26-18 at the half, but the Hawks went on a 12-4 run in the third quarter.
Holliday had eight points, and Yoggerst and Jordan Swanberg both had six.

The Riverton J-V defeated Tri-Valley Saturday 35-30 behind a dozen from Jordan Barney, who made his debut during the day, and 10 from Yoggerst.
The Hawks led at each break: 10-3, 18-8 and 22-15.
