The Riverton Hawks football team got to take some of its frustrating season out on the Kincaid South Fork Ponies Friday night.
Riverton scored the first 33 points of the game and finished with a 47-28 win, though the game was much more lopsided than the final score indicated.
Brandon Barney concluded his high school career with 116 yards and a touchdown, and fellow senior Josh Trader had two punt returns for scores, with both of them
basically untouched down either sideline.
Riverton got the ball first and went 64 yards in six plays, with Barney covering the final 9 for a TD. His 32-yard scamper two plays earlier moved the Hawks to the 9.
Spencer Pulliam added the PAT to make it 7-0 just 2:34 into the contest.
After a three-and-out, Trader took a punt 59 yards for a score, though the kick failed at the 6:52 mark.
Another three-and-out and a short punt left the Hawks at their 34, and 2:21 and seven plays later, Bobby Vanderwal found Austin Moore for a 33-yard TD strike. Pulliam
added the PAT boot.
Both Barney and Jarrod Lyons had 14-yard runs on the two preceding plays before Moore’s TD.
Kincaid went three-and-out again as the first quarter concluded, and Trader opened the second stanza with a 68-yard return.
Pulliam’s kick made it 27-0 just 21 seconds into the second period.
Seth King picked off Zack Hanlon two plays later, and the Hawks went 37 yards for another score, this time Justin Roberts rumbling in from the 7.
The Hawks overcame two penalties on the march, which included a 10-yard pass to Brennan Garcia and a 14-yard run by Barney.
The Ponies responded by marching down the field with relative ease, going 70 yards in seven plays. Four of those plays were at least 10 yards, including a 24-yard Hanlon
TD pass to Chase Tilley at the 3:31 mark.
Kincaid went for an onside kick and was successful, but they were stopped on downs near midfield.
The Hawks, facing fourth-and-2 with just 4.9 seconds left, found the end zone of the final play of the half, as Vanderwal connected with Moore on a 36-yard pass.
Pulliam made it 40-6 at the half with his boot.
Kincaid went three-and-out to begin the second half, as Mike Trader and Roberts, two more seniors, had sacks on consecutive plays.
Needing only 28 yards for a touchdown to put the running clock into motion, the Hawks required just five plays to do just that.
Barney was hit low near the goal line, but dove in to complete a 5-yard TD run.
The first two plays of the drive featured a 10-yard Barney run and an 11-yard run by Zack Murray.
The Pulliam boot made it 47-6 with 6:47 left in the game.
On the kickoff, the ball bounced off a Kincaid player and was recovered by the Hawks, but on the first play, the Hawks fumbled at the 5:45 mark.
The Hawks would only have the ball for 44.9 seconds the rest of the game, the last 44.9.
The Ponies scored three times in the final stanza. Shane Turner scored from the 1 at 10:05, then Jake Elmore scored from the 1 and 5 in the final 3:25.
The Hawks finally recovered an onside kick after the last score and took a knee to conclude the game.
Lyons added 38 yards on the ground, and Vanderwal finished 4-for-8 yards for 81 yards. Garcia caught two for 12 besides Moore’s two TD catches.
Curtis Robinson led with seven tackles, while Lyons and Mike Trader both had six and Corey Goodall had five.
Kwain Karrick paced the Ponies with 97 yards rushing, and Hanlon was 5-for-7 for 75 yards.
