RMS Academy Week to undergo changes
Academy Week at Riverton Middle School is headed for some major changes in the spring, according to Principal Fred Lamkey and
coordinator Michaela Campbell. Middle school students receive extra help in reading, writing and math during intersession.
In the past, this additional instruction was provided to students by grade level and students were generally selected based on current
grades in reading, writing, and math.   Classes covered material that was taught the previous quarter in hopes to cover material that
students did not understand from that quarter.  Spring Academy Week and future remedial courses will focus more on individual
student needs based upon MAP scores.
“Our programs were meeting the needs of students, but we are becoming more familiar with MAP testing results, and we are learning
how to use the assessment date to better prepare for intersession classes,” said Lamkey. “We are becoming more aware of specific
needs as we improve our data collection.” MAP testing has helped better identify lower-achieving students, noted Lamkey, whose school
has been modeling “what we are doing from the elementary school. We have better data and we will be better able to serve our
students,” he said.

RES students to participate in Jump Rope for Heart Feb. 26
Students at Riverton Elementary School are jumping at the chance to fight heart disease and stroke, our nation’s No. 1 and No.
3 killers, respectively.  On Feb. 26, the Riverton Elementary students will be participating in Jump Rope For Heart as a community
service project.  Students will jump rope to raise funds for the American Heart Association, which funds cardiovascular disease
research and public and professional education programs, while learning about building a heart-healthy lifestyle. Funding from
events such as Jump Rope For Heart have led to many lifesaving discoveries such as CPR, AEDs, pacemakers, bypass surgeries,
open heart surgeries, artificial heart valves, miscosurgery and life-extending drug treatments.  The average heart beats 100,000 times
each day. One of the best ways to take care of your heart is to make exercise a regular part of your everyday life. Jump Rope For
Heart teaches students how exercise benefits the heart and shows students that volunteering can be fun and beneficial to the whole
community.  They learn how they can make a difference by providing important community service and having a great time at this fun-
filled family event. Jump Rope For Heart is co-sponsored by the American Heart Association and the American Alliance for Health,
Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Money raised by the event will go to fund potentially lifesaving research and educational
and community programs. Please help our students help others. When a student asks you to be a sponsor, support Jump Rope For
Heart with whatever you can afford to give.  If you would like to help more, call your nearest American Heart Association office at  1-
800-AHA-USA1 (1-800-242-8721).

Bullet shot into home of Riverton resident
A local resident discovered on Sunday that a bullet had been shot into their home. According to
Riverton police chief Dave Smith, the department received a call from a residence on Carl Drive. The
occupant of the home heard a noise.  Upon investigating the noise, she found that someone had shot a
hole though a wall in her home.  She called the police.
The officer found that a high-power rifle bullet
had gone through a wall in her home.  They recovered the rifle bullet inside her home.  It appears to be
a .223, .308, or a 30-06 caliber rifle bullet. The officer could hear someone shooting while investigating
the call.  The shooting was occurring somewhere in the Spaulding area around Route 54.  When the
officers arrived in that area, the shooting stopped.  The exact location could not be determined and the
individual was not found.  However, the officer was informed by a Spaulding resident that some
projectile had also struck her tree while she was outside.  It appears that the suspect was firing into
the air or the bullets were ricocheting.
The police department seeking any information regarding the
suspect who was shooting in the Spaulding area around 1 p.m. on Sunday.  Anyone with information
can call the Riverton Police at 629-9800 and leave a tip.  All tips will be totally confidential.
There were also reports of car break-ins in Spaulding once again. Attempts to reach Chief Kenny
Metcalf were unsuccessful Tuesday.
Chief Smith there was one report of a break-in in Riverton Feb. 27;
the suspects took a GPS unit from an unlocked car on Jamestown Circle.
