RMS 8th graders lose heartbreaker to Athens
The host Riverton Middle School boys basketball team stormed back from a 15-point fourth quarter deficit to take the lead, but then gave up the final three points of the game in
a 37-35 heartbreaking loss against Athens Thursday night.
Athens led 33-18 near the midway point of the final stanza before the Hawks rallied.
Carsen Bertolo nailed a 3-pointer with about a minute left to put Riverton up 35-34, but the visitors responded.
In the waning seconds, two Riverton shots rattled in and out.
Will Schneider tossed in 13 points and Bertolo added 10, with Mitchell Patterson next with five.
The seventh graders pulled out a 29-21 win over the Braves; Athens made the score somewhat respectable with a 12-1 advantage in the final stanza.
Danny Roscetti finished with 11 points, four more than Braxton Ladew, to pace the Hawks.

The eighth graders competed in the Pleasant Plains Tournament to begin the campaign, and the opener was another close loss to Athens, 37-36.
Riverton outpointed the Braves 12-7 in the fourth period but could not completely close out the rally.
Kevin Bertolino led the way with 13 points, while Schneider and Aerik Bueltmann both had eight; Bueltmann also grabbed 11 rebounds, and Bertolo corralled six boards.
Riverton then lost to Springfield Franklin 45-27 despite a dozen from Schneider, six from Patterson and a team-high seven boards from Bueltmann.
Riverton won the fifth place game with a 43-25 win over A-C Central.
The Hawks pulled away with a 24-7 advantage after halftime.
Schneider pumped in 13 points, with Bertolo adding nine and Bertolino seven.
Bueltmann pulled down 15 boards.
The Hawks then lost to Rochester 38-29 last week, trailing at each quarter break.
Schneider tallied 12 points and Bertolo chipped in seven.
Bueltmann (seven) and Evan McClintock combined for 13 rebounds.

The seventh graders also opened their campaign at a Plains tournament.
Riverton opened with a 36-22 win over Athens as Roscetti poured in 25 points and Ben Boggs added nine.
Springfield Franklin then downed the Hawks 54-18; Roscetti (six) and Jacob Ewing combined for 11 markers.
Roscetti scored 11 and Boggs seven, but that was all the scoring in a 34-18 loss to Plains.
The Hawks then fell short against Rochester 36-28 despite 13 from Ladew, seven from Roscetti and six from Jazeel King.
