Price steps down as RHS boys hoops coach

This winter will be the first winter in 27 years that Kyle Price will not be involved in basketball, but he is quite content.
Price, who was hired as the new Dean of Students at Riverton High School Monday night, has submitted his resignation as boys basketball coach.
His wife Jill is due with the couple’s first child in about 10 days, and she works out of East Alton for a law firm.
The couple plans to buy a house in Carlinville, and with the new job, Price did not think it would be fair to the players.
“My biggest concern was time with my family, and I did not want to shortchange my new job,” said Price, who coached junior high boys basketball in Riverton for five years and
high school girls basketball for seven years before taking the reins last year of the high school boys program. “I did not want to get into a situation that I could not give my full
effort to the boys.
“The only fair thing to do was to give up the basketball job,” he added, saying it was one of the most difficult decisions he has ever made.
Another concern, considering the long days that would occur come basketball season, would be that he might “run out of gas,” in December or January, which would not be fair
to the players, Price said.
The couple’s new home in Carlinville will only be 25 miles from the Price family farm in Carrollton; both Price and his wife are from Carrollton, so many family members will be
nearby.
Giving up his social studies teaching position was not easy either.
“I love to teach, and teaching was always my goal,” Price said. “But I also realized the tremendous need for this new position at the high school.
“This will be a fresh challenge for me,” added Price, who said he was “reenergized” with the new position.
Price did not rule out coaching in the future.
RHS Athletics Director Rick Wagahoff said simply that Price “would be missed.”
He hopes to fill this position by the July 14 board meeting, though available teaching positions are limited. Applications will be accepted until July 1.
Price said that assistant coach Kyle Weber would be the “obviously logical choice.”
