Kirkpatrick, Pretzels whip Hawks
Kody Kirkpatrick almost outscored visiting Riverton by himself Friday night as the host New Berlin Pretzels posted a 54-38 win over the Hawks. Kirkpatrick nailed five 3-pointers
and was 14-for-19 from the charity stripe and finished with 33 points for the hosts, who outscored Riverton 15-4 in the second period to take a 24-14 halftime lead. Riverton was
outrebounded 23-18 and allowed the Pretzels to shoot 50 percent from the field (14-for-28). The Hawks were only 13-for-44 from the field, including 0-of-9 from downtown. Spencer
Pulliam tossed in 18 for the Hawks, while Mike Trader added eight and Justin Roberts six points and six rebounds.
Last Wednesday at Girard in a makeup game from a postponement one day earlier, Riverton lost 47-30. The Hawks trailed at each quarter break (13-8, 25-18 and 39-30), then did
not score in the final stanza, missing all 12 of their shots. Trader had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, and Pulliam added seven. Girard won the J-V game 56-50.

School board approves JH Dance Team
Three items were voted on last Wednesday at a special Riverton School Board meeting.
The board unanimously voted (7-0) to approve a junior high dance team, a topic brought up at the regular meeting earlier in the
month. There was one restriction attached: that summer camp was optional and not mandatory. Another unanimous vote named
Nicoud Insurance as the Agent of Record for the district. Regardless of insurance agent, the companies (Blue Cross, Health
Alliance, et al) are required to give all agents the same rate, noted Superintendent Tom Mulligan.
“When it come to agent of record, it is all about what services can they provide the district and the committee that interviewed agents
felt that Nicoud would provide the district with the most services,” he said.
The district is bidding out insurance right now, and Mulligan expects to finalize the coverage in July.
The third issue was the most controversial; it dealt with 10 seniors who allegedly vandalized personal property of other students
(but not school property) as part of an apparent prank. The school district, because of privacy laws, cannot release the names of the
students; those students, and others, came to plead their case before the board, though that happened in closed session,
according to Mulligan. Mulligan could not disclose what punishment these students received from the high school, and the school
board decision was to “uphold the administrative decision regarding consequences.”
Ultimately, the vote was 4-3 to uphold the consequences (Pam Cuffle, Scott McClure, Paul Nonneman and Larry Patterson yes, Kim
Frick Baskett, Mike Klebe and Debbie Moore no). The next regular meeting is slated for June 8; Mulligan said Monday that there will
be another special meeting later in June, to discuss the literacy audit from Gretchen Courtney and Associates; it will be partnered
with a policy committee meeting. (June 4, 2009 issue)
Clear Lake Township Recycle Program to cease in December
In 2006, Clear Lake Township had limited resources for curbside recycle service within the Township.  With the assistance of Sangamon County Public Health Department and
F&W Resources, on Nov. 15, 2006, the Township started a recycle program for plastic, paper and cans which grew to two bins. In May 2009,  the township was notified they would
have to pay to have the bins picked up and emptied beginning in June.  The present pickup was being done free of charge.  A meeting was held with Recycle Coordinator Angela
Harris and Jim Stone from the Sangamon County Public Health Department.  Attending was Sangamon County Board member Jim Good, Township Supervisor Dennis Wieland,
Road Commissioner Alex Lyons and employee Gayla Mueller.  A discussion was held to see what could be done in the best interest of the community and if any alternatives were
available.  Presently an average of a ton and a half of recycled material is dumped every week from the bins, which would cost $150 a week to maintain the program.   Local waste
haulers were contacted about the availability of curbside service in the Township.  Since the popularity of recycling has increased, all waste haulers now have some type of
program available.  After reviewing and discussing options; it has been determined that the bins will be removed in lieu of curbside service.   The bins will be phased out and
removed on December 31, 2009. The Township board hates to see this program ceased due to its popularity, but with curbside service available throughout the township, the cost
does not seem to be justified.  It seemed more reasonable with today’s economy to switch to the convenience of curbside service and eliminate the recycle dropoff program.
Present users may contact their current waste hauler to sign up for their recycle program.  Waste haulers have their own policies and procedures to recycling including number of
cans, costs, etc.   Recycle bins are available free of charge with Lake Area Disposal, Waste Management and Allied Waste.   Currently Lake Area Disposal has a 24-hour drop-off
recycle center at  2742 S. 6th Street in Springfield (Turn east at County Market Light – located behind Kicks).

Hawks win on Senior Night against Ponies
A 16-9 third period advantage proved decisive Friday as the visiting Nokomis Redskins posted a 34-30 win over Riverton. The
Hawks led 17-13 at the half. Riverton was 12-for-30 from the field, but was outrebounded 27-12. Josh Trader had 20 points, but
no one else had more than four. Mike Trader grabbed five boards.
Saturday, the Hawks trekked south to Pinckneyville to face the Panthers in the Panther Basketball Showcase. Riverton was close
early, but a 21-8 third period deficit helped lead to a 58-41 defeat. The Panthers led 14-13 after one period and 25-19 at the
break. Josh Trader pumped in 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Spencer Pulliam finished with nine points and Alex
Behrens five. Mike Trader corralled six rebounds. The Panthers shot 21-for-46 from the field, and the Hawks were only 13-for-43.
Tuesday on Senior Night, the Hawks bested Kincaid South Fork 54-47. Josh Trader pumped in 27 points, including a perfect
10-of-10 from the charity stripe, and he grabbed 10 boards. Pulliam finished with 11 points, and Mike Trader added 10 points and
10 caroms. Kincaid outshot the Hawks (19-for-43 compared to 19-for-51), but Riverton won the boards battle 35-26 and
committed only 10 turnovers. Zach Yoggerst was the only other Hawk to score, with six tallies. Riverton trailed 21-19 at
intermission but outscored the Ponies 18-12 in the third period and 17-14 in the final stanza. The J-V Hawks also won, 61-49.
Riverton raced to a 25-9 lead after one period and led 33-24 at the half and 48-34 after three periods. Bret Thixton pumped in 17
points, one more than Connor Holliday, who nailed four 3-pointers. Yoggerst added 10 and Alec Seymour seven.

“No concrete evidence” found in RHS vandalism case
By Byron Painter

There is plenty of talk around Riverton about what and what did not happen in an apparent prank involving 10 unnamed RHS
seniors.
“We cannot directly link any personal property damage or school property damage to the alleged incident,” said Superintendent Tom
Mulligan Tuesday afternoon. “There was no concrete evidence.”
Mulligan confirmed that straw was put in hallways and in unlocked lockers, however. The matter has been turned over to local law
enforcement officials, Mulligan added, when he was asked about criminal charges. Mulligan wants to move on, he said. “We have
bigger and better things in our community,” he concluded.

RMS seventh graders win sectional
By Byron Painter

The host Riverton Middle School seventh grade volleyball team controlled the match from the start and cruised past Mansfield Blue
Ridge 25-17, 25-17 Monday night to win its own sectional and clinch a berth in the Class 3A state tournament Saturday in
Assumption. Riverton (20-4) will play unbeaten Chillicothe (25-0) Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in the third quarterfinal. The championship
match is March 17. A point from Tori Bounds gave Riverton an early lead in Game 1, then Kirsten Mosley rattled off 10 points in a
row. She had two aces in the spurt, which included three Morgan Green blocks, two kills from Carlie Cuffle and a kill from Katelyn
Churchill. Three markers from Churchill (Cuffle ended the last two with kills) and one from Bounds put Riverton up 21-9.
A late surge by the Knights still came up well short. Riverton trailed early in Game 2 before five points from Mosley (an ace, two
errors and kills from Cuffle and Green) put Riverton up for good. Cuffle served three points, with aces bookending a Blue Ridge
error, then Heckman scored four in a row (a Green kill followed by three hitting errors, one of which came after Bounds took one on
the head on a spike attempt) as the Riverton lead swelled to 16-7. Green served two aces and Bounds scored two points (a lift and
ace) to make it 23-14. A missed serve on match point kept Blue Ridge in the match, but the Lady Knights responded with a missed
serve of their own to send Riverton to state.
Lady Hawks win regional over Maroa
By Byron Painter
Editor
The Riverton seventh grade  volleyball team claimed a regional title last Thursday by outlasting Maroa-Forsyth 25-8, 18-25, 25-20. The Lady Hawks never trailed by more than one
point in Game 1; Carlie Cuffle scored four points (three aces and a Morgan Green kill) and five tallies from Katelyn Churchill (Cuffle kill and four Maroa hitting errors) helped
Riverton to a 17-6 lead. Alyssa Koger then served out Game 1 with six straight tallies; Cuffle had two kills and Green a tip in the spurt. Cuffle was the first server (out of six) to score
in Game 2, but two points from Madelyn Johnston and two more from Maggie Baietto put Maroa up 9-5. Green netted two for the Lady Hawks (an ace and Heather Dyer putaway),
but Maroa’s Kennedy Flesner responded with four markers, including an ace. Despite an ace from Churchill and three in a row from Tori Bounds, Riverton still trailed 17-14. Only
one of the last three Riverton servers scored (Cuffle on an ace) as two points from Rachel Tomlovich and aces from Gabbie Clifton and Johnston helped the Lady Trojans force a
decisive Game 3. Two Alex Berry aces put Maroa up early, but a five-point Cuffle run, including three aces, rallied Riverton to a 9-4 lead. Only two servers in a nine-server stretch
(Morgan Heckman for Riverton, with Green contributing a kill and Flesner for Maroa) scored, leaving the game 12-8 Riverton. One point from Kirsten Mosley extended the Lady
Hawks’ lead, but two aces from Clifton pulled Maroa within 16-13. Aces from Heckman and Green put Riverton in front 21-16. Churchill scored once and Berry twice as Maroa
pulled within 23-20. But a Trojan hitting error preceded a Bounds ace to end the match.

Clear Lake Township to phase out recycle program Aug. 1
In May 2009, the Township was notified they would have to pay to have the recycle bins picked up and emptied beginning in June. The present pickup was being done free of
charge.
A meeting was held to discuss what could be done in the best interest of the community and if any alternatives were available. Presently an average of a ton and a half of recycled
material is dumped every week from the bins, which cost $150 a week to maintain the program.
The Township board regrets this program has to cease due to its popularity; but with curbside service available throughout the township, the cost does not seem to be justified. It
seems more reasonable with today’s economy to switch to the convenience of curbside service and eliminate the recycle program. On Aug. 1, the program will cease.  Present
users may contact their current waste hauler to sign up for their recycle program. Waste haulers have their own policies and procedures to recycling including number of cans,
costs, etc. Most report that recycle bins are available free of charge at no additional costs.   The disposal of this program DOES NOT affect the monthly dumpster program.
