The seventh grade at Riverton Middle School
finished a canned food drive on Nov. 26 as a
social service project to support our study of
the Great  Depression and Dust Bowl of the
1930s. We learned a lot about giving for the
benefit of others and what people can do to
help those who are experiencing hard times.
The seventh grade homerooms collected over
1,400 canned items to donate to the Salvation
Army, in turn benefiting families in the Riverton
area. The seventh grade homerooms
engaged in a friendly competition to see who
could bring in the most cans, with the winner
being Mrs. Morris’ room. The kids all worked
very hard and helped to make this project a
success. In the photo above are Chase
Dickerson, Braxton LaDew, Chris Carver,
Dalton Vallbracht, Jakob Ewing and Enny

Riverton PD conducts tobacco compliance checks
Three Riverton businesses did not sell tobacco to underage kids last week, according to police chief Dave Smith.vAll three
businesses (Kent’s IGA, Riverton Fast Stop and the Party Store) complied with state law and asked for identification from the
minors. The police department received an $1100 grant from the Illinois Liquor Commission to conduct compliance checks (three
of them, in fact). Any cost for overtime, payment of the underage kids, the “buy” money to attempt to purchase the products all comes
from the grant money, according to Smith. There will be two more rounds of checks between now and the end of May, noted Smith.
Riverton officers participated in the checks; before three Riverton officers were trained and certified to conduct the checks, outside
officers had to come in and perform the checks.

Chastain qualifies for golf sectionals
Riverton’s Matt Chastain shot an 83 at the Porta regional in high school boys golf action Tuesday at Shambolee. The top eight
individuals not on qualifying teams (the top two teams qualify) advance to sectionals. Chastain will play at the Camp Point
Central Sectional Oct. 13.
Riverton shot 406 as a team, with Ryan Painter shooting 99, Bret Thixton 107 and Kenny Smith 117.  Last Wednesday, the
Hawks competed in the Sangamo Conference tournament and finished seventh.  Chastain carded a 93, one shot better than
Thixton.  Smith and Jordan Swanberg both finished at 103. Thursday at Scovill in Decatur, Chastain was medalist (35), but the
Hawks were fourth behind St. Teresa (164), Maroa-Forsyth (166) and the Clinton Maroons (175). Smith shot 48, one shot
better than Thixton and two better than Painter. Saturday, the Hawks competed in the Taylorville Invitational at Lake Shore and
finished seventh in the small school division.
Chastain finished at 89, two shots out of the top 10. Painter shot 96, Thixton 99 and Smith 102.
Thixton saves fellow golfer
Riverton’s Bret Thixton just reacted like many others hope they would in a similar situation.
Saturday at the Sangamon County Golf Tournament at Lincoln Greens, playing partner Seth Nelson of Auburn/Pawnee started choking on a hot dog during their break between
holes 9 and 10, and Thixton performed the Heimlich manuever to dislodge the unruly dog. Thixton had played with Nelson a couple of times before Saturday. Thixton told Nelson,
six inches taller and 60 pounds heavier than Thixton, to stand up immediately. Thixton told someone to go for help, but “it did not take very long at all” to get the hot dog unlodged.
“He might have died if I had not done anything,” said Thixton, who said he had
never had to “think about using it (the Heimlich) before Saturday.”
Nelson tried to wash down the hot dog with Gatorade but was unsuccessful, which was “pretty freaky at first,” according to Thixton, who said “I did not want to hurt him.” The pair
had to immediately get back to golfing just a few moments later; both shot 99.

Last lap pass puts Allgaier in victory lane at Talladega

Allgaier wins in New Jersey
The combination of a little luck, the necessary skill and the right pit road strategy turned Riverton High School graduate Justin
Allgaier into a road course winner Sunday in the inaugural Loud Energy Drink 150 at New Jersey Motorsports Park. Allgaier, making
his career-first road course start, was in the lead when the rain started falling prompting ARCA RE/MAX Series officials to wave the
checkered flag 19 laps shy of the scheduled 67-lap, 150-mile distance.
Allgaier, out of sequence with many of the front-runners, had already made his pit stop for fuel earlier than most and found himself
the leader just in time for the rain to fall.
“I’ve got to hand this one to my crew chief Jim Pohlman,” said Allgaier. “He was up late last night rewinding the race in his mind, so
he knew exactly when we needed to pit for fuel and still make it to the end. As it turned out, it also put us in position to win the race.
Then we got some help from Mother Nature. I would have rather won the thing under green, but we’ll take it this way too.
“On Tuesday testing here, it was my first time road course racing ever,” he added. “Felt like I was in a John Deere tractor because I
was plowing more dirt than I was on the racetrack. All in all, it’s a great weekend and it was a great experience. If you look at the
ARCA RE/MAX Series, we’ve got the most diverse array of racetracks in any series, and fortunately now we’ve been able to win on a
dirt track, a short track, a superspeedway and on a road course, so, for us, that’s really cool.”
Allgaier is now in third place in the points race (4300); Scott Speed (4520) and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (4455) are ahead. Allgaier took
the lead from Dexter Bean on lap 36 when Bean ducked into the pit area for service. Allgaier led the remainder of the race, including
10 laps of caution for rain showers while series officials waited to see if the storms would subside. Just two races remain in the
2008 ARCA RE/MAX Series — the ARCA RE/MAX 250 at Talladega Oct. 3 and ARCA Championship Weekend at Toledo Speedway
Oct. 11-12.
