Behrens named Millikin Honors Scholar
In recognition of outstanding scholastic achievements, Jacob Wayne Behrens of Riverton was recently accepted into the Honors Scholars
Program at Millikin University.  Millikin Honors Scholars receive monetary awards of at least $40,000 ($10,000/year) in academic scholarship
assistance.
Proving eligibility for the program, Behrens demonstrated high academic achievement on standardized tests, ranked in the top 10 percent of his
high school class and completed a successful Honors Scholarship Interview at Millikin.  He is a graduate of Riverton High School.  Jacob’s
parents are Greg and Deb Behrens.
Millikin’s Honors Program introduces students to college-level scholarship, research, critical thinking and writing during the freshman and
sophomore years.
Hallmarks of the Millikin Honors Program include small and engaging seminars, innovative courses, interaction with campus leaders,
independent scholarship, service contributions and an individualized plan of study.  Honors Scholars receive special research training as
freshmen and the opportunity to present their studies at Millikin’s Honors Scholars Conference.

Weber hired as new Riverton boys basketball coach
By Byron Painter
Editor
The Riverton School Board Monday night hired Kyle Weber to replace Kyle Price as high school boys basketball coach.
Weber was the J-V coach under Price and Jon Hampton before that; he also coached at the junior high.
Weber, who had been golf coach, resigned that post Monday.
A 1997 Teutopolis High School graduate, Weber teaches business classes at RHS.
He does not foresee wholesale changes taking over for Price, who is now RHS Dean of Students.
“We hit the boards hard and we will have to keep our defensive average down,” said Weber, who is an Eastern Illinois University graduate.
This year’s seniors were eighth graders when Weber was a junior high coach.
Weber coached at Cumberland while student teaching, and then, a few months before getting hired in Riverton, worked at the Army National
Guard in the counter drug program.
“We think he is obviously the best man for the job,” said Riverton Athletic Director Rick Wagahoff. “He has paid his dues and worked his way
through the program.”
Clayton Trueblood, 10,
placed first for his age group
at the Decatur Lakeside Kid’s
Triathlon July 5.  Clayton also
finished fourth overall out of
31 participants ages 7-10.
Clayton would like to thank
his Dolphin Swim Team
coaches Rachel Frost, Sarah
Brauer, and Gretchen Frost
for helping him improve on
his swimming.  He said that
without their help, he would
not have been able to reach
his goal.
Clayton, a fifth grader at
Riverton Middle School, is the
son of Jill and John Kaylor of
Riverton and Kerry and
Ashley Trueblood of
Petersburg.  He also is the
grandson of Roland and Lois
Dearing of Oakford, Bob and
Betty Trueblood of Effingham
and David and Lynda Pointer
of Springfield.
New lunch payment system at Riverton High School
Beginning this week, Riverton High School will have a new system for lunch room payments and food purchasing procedures.
There will no longer be cash registers, lunch tickets or cash purchases in the cafeteria.  Students will now make their lunch
payments to Joni Marsh in the high school office. There is no limit on the amount students or parents can place in each account.
Students will be assigned a four-digit PIN and as they pass through the lunch line, they will enter their PIN, the cashiers will ring up
their order and the student will approve the purchase.
It is important to keep the students accounts up-to-date with payments. Students must have money in their account in order to
purchase a lunch. Prices for a Type A lunch will remain at $1.50.  A la carte items will also be available.  You may want to have a
conversation with your child as to how much money they can spend each day on their lunches.
By the end of August, we should have photo identification on the system to ensure who is actually using the account.  Until then,
students need to make sure they keep their PIN number to themselves.  In other lunch room news, Aramark and our local vending
company will be providing “healthy snacks” in both the lunch line and vending machine.  We are also cutting back on the number of
days we serve French fries (from three to two).  As of next year, deep frying will be a thing of the past at RHS.

Illinois Representative Bill Mitchell last week
presented a $50,000 grant to Clear Lake Twp.
for a Salt Storage/Mixing Facility on the south
side of the current township building.  Total
cost will be around $70,000.  The difference
will not increase taxes but will come from
reserves that the township has in investments
or funds from Motor Fuel Tax funds.  The
building was designed and engineered by
Allied Design.  The grant requires the
construction to be completed within a year.
The project has gone out for bid and bids will
be opened at the next regular scheduled
board meeting on Sept. 2.  It is expected to be
completed within 3-6 months.  The actual
structure will be a concrete foundation and
wall system that will have three mixing bin
bays.  The actual size will be 40x38.  Plans
call for a wood frame structure above the salt
storage area that will be built or later added
pending funds.   The township maintains over
60 miles of roadways and the storage unit will
hold the salt and cinders needed each year to
maintain the roads.  The township has spent
the last seven years updating equipment,
added a new office and garage and now the
salt storage facility.  The township continues
to update to meet the needs of the residents,
which have recently included a water fill
station. In the photo, standing from left to right:
