County Board of Trustees votes against Gillman petition
By Byron Painter

Monday night, the Sangamon County Board of Trustees voted 6-0 against a proposal to annex 40 acres of land from the Tri-City School District to Riverton.
The land, owned by Bruce Gillman, is already part of the Village of Riverton after being annexed last October. It is located near the village’s sewer plant.
Tri-City superintendent Dave Bruno felt his district’s case was strong, and the board agreed.
“I thought we had proved our case,” he said. “I thought we would win without a doubt.”
The trustees gave several reasons for their decision, including there would be no current students involved and no benefit to a student to attend Riverton over Tri-City despite the
proximity of Riverton schools to the land, which will be provided in writing to the involved parties.
Gillman attorney Phillip Reed declined comment Tuesday through his secretary.
If Gillman and Reed decide to appeal, that appeal would be heard by a judge, though no further information would be provided.
That judge would make the decision solely based on the transcripts.
One trustee was absent.  (

Riverton School Board District Crisis Plan
The Riverton School Board recently approved the district Crisis Plan.
Using feedback from parents and staff (survey results), the Riverton School District convened a district-wide committee
comprised of administrators, teachers, support staff, parents, local fire and police department representatives,
representatives from the Secretary of State Police, the Illinois State Police and the Sangamon County Tactical Response
Team.   The individuals that were on the district Crisis Plan Committee have years of experience and a wealth of expertise in
crisis planning.
The Crisis Plan is a document that is intended to be a guide for staff.  The crisis plan is a set of procedures that should be
used as a guide by district staff when handling various emergency/crisis situations.  Those crisis situations include bomb
threats, confrontational persons in the building, suicide threats, weapons, etc.
After several meetings, the committee made a recommendation to the school board at the April meeting and the board
approved the plan.  The district administrative staff will now work with the district employees to ensure everyone is aware of the
procedures and are trained to implement them.
This committee is also the group that made the recommendation to the board earlier in the year to approve the district phone
system School Reach, which allows the district to contact parents simultaneously with emergency information or information
about school closings.
