RES students to participate in Jump Rope for Heart Feb. 26
Students at Riverton Elementary School are jumping at the chance to fight heart disease and stroke, our nation’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers, respectively. On Feb. 26, the Riverton
Elementary students will be participating in Jump Rope For Heart as a community service project. Students will jump rope to raise funds for the American Heart Association,
which funds cardiovascular disease research and public and professional education programs, while learning about building a heart-healthy lifestyle. Funding from events such
as Jump Rope For Heart have led to many lifesaving discoveries such as CPR, AEDs, pacemakers, bypass surgeries, open heart surgeries, artificial heart valves, miscosurgery
and life-extending drug treatments. The average heart beats 100,000 times each day. One of the best ways to take care of your heart is to make exercise a regular part of your
everyday life. Jump Rope For Heart teaches students how exercise benefits the heart and shows students that volunteering can be fun and beneficial to the whole community.
They learn how they can make a difference by providing important community service and having a great time at this fun-filled family event. Jump Rope For Heart is co-sponsored
by the American Heart Association and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Money raised by the event will go to fund potentially lifesaving
research and educational and community programs. Please help our students help others. When a student asks you to be a sponsor, support Jump Rope For Heart with whatever
you can afford to give. If you would like to help more, call your nearest American Heart Association office at 1-800-AHA-USA1 (1-800-242-8721).

RHS girls split at Early Bird
The Riverton High School girls basketball team finished 2-2 at its own Early Bird Review last week after falling in the third place game to Mt. Zion 43-25. The Lady Braves led 20-6
after one period. Emily Maulding paced Riverton with 11 tallies, while Kate Blissett had seven and Shelby Cuffle four.
“I thought we had some moments last week where we looked good — and then some moments where we didn’t look as good,” said coach Jeff Koger. “The field of teams that
were there was pretty evenly matched and on any given night anyone could have beaten anyone. It’s early and I’m looking forward to the next several weeks and watching them
improve.”
On Friday, the Lady Hawks rallied past St. Teresa 52-50 as Blissett nailed an 8-footer in the lane with four seconds left.
RHS trailed by six in the latter moments of the third period, but rallied to take a 43-42 lead with six minutes left after a 7-2 run that featured buckets from Maulding and Kelly Smith
and a triple from Blissett. Buckets from Cuffle and Lauryn Fitzgerald (in transition) put Riverton up 48-44, but the Lady Bulldogs rattled off six points in a row to take the lead. Smith
knotted the score at 50 with 55.3 seconds left after getting fouled on a rebound and nailing both freebies. The Lady Bulldogs, who on the possession before flung up an ill-advised
3-pointer, then were called for a traveling violation with 44 seconds left. Maulding had 21 points, 18 before halftime, for the Lady Hawks, while Smith had 18 points and 10
rebounds. Blissett finished with nine points for RHS, which finished 21-for-39 from the field.
Last Thursday, the Lady Hawks scored only three points in the final 9 1/2 minutes of the game in a 37-27 loss to St. Joseph-Ogden. SJ-O went up 25-24 after three quarters after
two free throws in the final seconds of the third, then outscored the Lady Hawks 12-3 in the final eight minutes. Ashley Cantrall nailed a 3 with 3:14 left to get RHS within 32-27, but
the Lady Hawks did not score again. RHS led 10-8 after one quarter and 17-16 at intermission despite having 18 turnovers before halftime. Riverton was only 9-for-22 from the
field. Maulding had 10 points and five caroms, while Fitzgerald added eight.
Last Wednesday in the season opener, the Lady Hawks outscored Clinton 10-5 in overtime to win 55-50. Smith had 19 points, six in overtime, as the Lady Hawks pulled out the
win. The game was tight throughout, with the score 10-10 after one and Riverton up 25-24 at the half and 35-33 heading into the final stanza. Blissett also had 19 points, 16 before
halftime, and Maulding contributed 12. Riverton finished 21-for-51 from the field and the Lady Maroons were 21-for-40.
Monday night, Riverton downed visiting Mt. Olive 45-24 as Blissett pumped in 21 points, 14 before halftime. Maulding contributed eight and Cuffle six. RHS led 13-8, 23-16 and 29-
21 at the quarter breaks.

Stark to compete in Miss Jr. Pre-Teen Pageant
Lexie Stark of Riverton was recently selected to participate in Nationals’ 2010 Miss Jr. Pre-Teen Bloomington pageant competition that will take place April 17-18. Lexie learned of
her acceptance into this year’s competition as Nationals, Inc. announced their selections last month; a community member nominated her name to the competition. Lexie, a first
grader at Riverton Elementary School, submitted an application and took part in an interview session that was conducted by Patty Neidert, this year’s Bloomington Pageant
Coordinator. Lexie, the daughter of Jennifer (Combs) and Eric Stark of Riverton, will be competing for her share of thousands of dollars in prizes and specialty gifts that will be
distributed to contestants. She will be competing in the Miss Jr. Pre-Teen Division, one of four divisions that will have young ladies between the ages of 7 and 19 competing in
modeling routines that include casual wear and formal wear. Most important, Lexie, who will be in the 7-9 year old age group, will display her personality and interviewing skills
while interviewing with this year’s Bloomington judging panel. Personality is the No. 1 aspect that each contestant is judged on during all phases of competition.
If Lexie were to win the title of Miss Jr. Pre-Teen Bloomington, she would represent Bloomington and the surrounding communities at the Cities of America National Competition
that will take place in Orlando. Over $60,000 in prizes and awards will be presented at the National Competition while each winner enjoys this expense-paid trip of five nights and
six days in Orlando. There is no cost to Lexie for participating in the pageant competition. Community businesses, organizations and private individuals will assist Lexie in
participating in this year’s competition by becoming an official sponsor to her. Through sponsorship, each contestant receives all the necessary training, rehearsals and financial
support which will allow Lexie to become a very confident and well-prepared contestant in this year’s Bloomington Pageant. Any business, organization or private individual who
may be interested in becoming a sponsor to Lexie may contact 836-1802.

School board policy committee discusses potential handbook changes
On April 6 at 5:30, the Riverton School District held a Policy Committee meeting to go over potential middle school, high school and extracurricular handbook changes. Most of the
suggested changes occurred due to parent/administration meeting discussions. Formal votes will be taken by school board members at their regular meeting April 12. Changes
reviewed were prearranged absences, tardies, the grading scale, weighted class offerings and discontinuing the honor roll breakfast (Handbook sections 1.00, 1.10, 1.20, 2.00,
2.11, 2.13.). The current grading scale is a 7-point range, and the proposed change to a 10-point range is in line with other schools in the area, and for the same reason: college
entrance competition. It was also suggested to remove Section VII – Intersession, and Section 1.50 – Intersession Attendance. Some board members feel that since the grading
scale is going to a 10-point range, that a change to the grades earned for inclusion on superior and regular honor rolls is in order. There was discussion on strictly As for a
student to be on superior, and Bs for inclusion on regular honor roll. Any student receiving a C during the quarter, even if it's for a weighted class, may be excluded from the honor
rolls. Those in attendance at this meeting were Pam Cuffle, Mike Klebe, Scott McClure, Paul Nonneman, Larry Patterson, Supt. Mulligan, Mike Gum and Bill Lamkey.
The Honor Roll Breakfast is slated for elimination, unfortunately, because of the district's budget. It wasn't stated how much money this would save. It is typically held at the KC
Hall every spring. Extracurricular activities as regards to policy were reviewed in in Section 6.10 through 6.32. There was some moving around of the groups and clubs subject to
eligibility requirements. Another proposed statement to the policy for academic eligibility, under 6.32, was the addition of “The HS Administration will have the authority to make
alternate consequences for eligibility violations for activities that are not governed by IHSA guidelines.” Finally, Sections 6.60 through 6.75 were discussed, with a lot of
conversation on 6.70 Substance Abuse, 6.71 Use or Possession of Tobacco Products and 6.72 Use or Possession of Illegal Substances. There was another look at 6.75
Criminal Involvement, as last year's high school “prank” involved senior students who were allowed to participate in graduation ceremonies. Supt. Mulligan said he'd think about
the discussions and take another look at some of these sections. The meeting concluded at 7:20 p.m. (From April 8, 2010 editions)

Mulligan: Other administrators to pick up duties of athletic/activities director
According to Superintendent Tom Mulligan, plans are not finalized yet as who will pick up the extra duties after the school board voted Monday night to eliminate the position of
athletic/activity director Rick Wagahoff. The likely plan, noted Mulligan, would be to name Chris Koerwitz as Middle School Assistant Principal/Athletic Director, moving his
transportation duties to Bill Geiger and moving all activities to Mike Gum. Joni Marsh will remain as the athletic director secretary, and Bill Lamkey “will take over some of the bigger
activities at the HS, such as budgeting, evaluating coaches and programs, working with parent/student concerns, etc.”
Mulligan admitted concerns about continuing shootouts and other tournaments in the future, though next year’s contracts are already done. “We are committed to continuing the
great tradition of tournaments that Mr. Wagahoff has brought to the Riverton School District,” said Mulligan. “It is naive to think that we can cut a position totally, absorb those duties
with current staff and feel that nothing will suffer. “Unfortunately, tough budget times calls for tough decisions to be made and everyone must do more with the same amount of
time,” he continued.
Mulligan acknowledged that no Illinois Elementary School Association state tournaments will be in Riverton next year, most likely. The Hawk Center hosted basketball and
volleyball tournaments this year. Mulligan hopes that this decision “is a short term solution to a financial crisis. “The position would not have been there in the first place if we
would have thought we could the position at the level we are accustomed to with less,” he said. “We would absolutely like to get that position back in the future.” (From April 15,
2010 edition)

six; Riverton won the offensive boards battle 22-4 and the overall battle 36-27. The J-V won 47-33 as Schneider poured in 26 points. Carsen Bertolo scored eight, Mitchell
Patterson six and Jagodzinski five.
