RGSL officer elections rescheduled to Nov. 8
The Riverton Girls Softball League held its October meeting this past Sunday. The scheduled 2010 officer elections were re-
scheduled for the November meeting to be Sunday, Nov. 8, at 4 p.m. (tentatively in the cafeteria at Riverton Elementary School).
Despite the low attendance, several exciting new programs were discussed for the 2010 season:
--Creation of kid-pitch teams for 9 and 10-year old girls. Members in attendance agreed that the additional opportunity would be
beneficial as long as parents and players are offered the option of still participating in RGSL’s existing divisions.
--It was suggested that starting an “open gym” would benefit girls that were interested in additional practice, as well as give
younger girls a “winter” activity.
--Creation of a T-ball program for 5 and 6-year-old boys and girls.
--Possible expansion to include 15 and 16-year-olds in Division III.
RGSL is a volunteer-driven organization that is entering its 35th year or providing a summer recreational program for Riverton
and Tri-City area youth. One key point brought up at the recent meeting was the need for volunteers. In addition to coaches
progressing, new programs will put a strain on the organization. RGSL needs volunteers in order to continue operations.
Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, former players, community members, high schoolers in need of community service hours
... all are welcome!
Volunteers are needed for a variety of one-time activities, including organizational opportunities (i.e., fundraiser assistance,
coordinating pictures, special events organizers) as well as team volunteers (coaches and assistant coaches) for the season.
Individuals interested in getting involved may contact Carl Fisher at 220-3524 or attend any RGSL meeting.

RMS Academy Week to undergo changes
Academy Week at Riverton Middle School is headed for some major changes in the spring, according to Principal Fred Lamkey and coordinator Michaela Campbell. Middle school
students receive extra help in reading, writing and math during intersession.
In the past, this additional instruction was provided to students by grade level and students were generally selected based on current grades in reading, writing, and math.
Classes covered material that was taught the previous quarter in hopes to cover material that students did not understand from that quarter. Spring Academy Week and future
remedial courses will focus more on individual student needs based upon MAP scores.
“Our programs were meeting the needs of students, but we are becoming more familiar with MAP testing results, and we are learning how to use the assessment date to better
prepare for intersession classes,” said Lamkey. “We are becoming more aware of specific needs as we improve our data collection.” MAP testing has helped better identify lower-
achieving students, noted Lamkey, whose school has been modeling “what we are doing from the elementary school. We have better data and we will be better able to serve our
students,” he said.

the cause. Fifth Graders: Bring in washcloths or Hand Towels (16”x 28”) Sixth Graders: Bring Wide- Tooth Combs Seventh Graders: Bring in bars of soap Eighth Graders: Bring in
Toothbrushes (in original packing) and Standard Size Band–Aids. 2). Bring in any spare change. Donation jars are located in your homeroom class. All donations will be sent to
