of singers. Calling all former singers! If you are one of those former singers, please contact Mrs. Armintrout at 217-629-6001, ext 348.

New Year’s weekend quiet for Riverton PD
Per Riverton Police Chief Dave Smith, New Year’s was quiet – four traffic stops and two minor-issue type calls were responded to by village police. However, leading up to the
Christmas holiday, Dec. 17 at the Village Tap was an initial altercation, resolved amongst patrons, Smith noted, but then Dec. 18, early a.m., police responded to a repeat call at
that location involving a fight.  A report was taken by the officer.  It has been turned over to the state’s attorney’s office. There was one call for intoxicated persons fighting on private
property during the Thanksgiving holiday.  No arrest was made as the persons in question had left the property by the time police arrived.

Arrest made in weekend burglary spree in Riverton
Riverton police have arrested Kimani Christie, 18, of Riverton, in a string of burglaries that occurred overnight Saturday. Christie is facing 30 counts of burglary to a vehicle, along
with theft, resisting a police officer, criminal trespass to motor vehicle and illegal consumption by a minor. Riverton Police Chief Dave Smith said minor stuff was taken, mainly
money, though GPS units were also taken; Christie when apprehended was intoxicated and had around $50 in cash on him. He is currently being held in the county jail. All of the
burglary counts are felonies, which carry a minimum sentence of one year and one day in jail. Smith is still investigating if Christie has a connection to another string of burglaries
that have occurred recently in town. In every case, Smith said, the items taken came from unlocked cars; all of the items taken have been recovered. Some of the victims have been
victimized before, Smith added. Tracks in the snow indicated that Christie had gone up to other cars, discovered they were locked and then left. The areas in question where the
burglaries occurred were roughly, according to Smith, from Jamestown Estates and Second Street to the elementary school/Washington and Jefferson Street areas. Christie was
first seen on the elementary school playground and was caught near his home, which is in the vicinity of the elementary school. The spree started around 3 a.m., and Smith said
Christie was apprehended around 6 a.m. Sunday after a foot chase. (From Jan. 13, 2011 edition)

RAC replacing baseball park fence
Riverton residents driving on Lincoln Street in recent weeks should have noticed a change at the Riverton Athletic Club baseball field; the wooden fence is gone and has been
replaced temporarily by an orange ‘snow fence.’ “A couple months back the membership decided that the wooden outfield fence had to go,” said RAC president Jim Good. “The
fence was about 30 years old and ready to fall down.” The RAC bought the materials and decided to do the install and demolition themselves, after discovering that a wooden
fence was cheaper than a chain link fence. “It will be more work, but it is well worth it,” said Good. The Village of Riverton and Clear Lake Township have authorized the use of
some of their equipment to help get the job completed. “It is great that we are able to all work together to improve the facility that serves our community,” said Good. “There is a
handful of us that are kind of guiding the work, primarily Alex Lyons and Max Shekelton, and then the rest of us are day labor. “If people drive by and see us out there working, they
can stop by and help out if they would like,” he said. “No help will be turned away.” The new fence will cost about $6000, and it will sit for a year, since it is treated lumber. It will be
painted at some point, Good added. If the weather cooperates, the fence should be completed in a couple of weeks.
Cantrall throws perfect game
Ashley Cantrall tossed a five-inning perfect game as the Riverton Lady Hawks softball team whipped Illini Central 16-0 last Thursday. Cantrall had five strikeouts in the perfecto.
Lorna Hopper was 3-for-4 with three doubles, four runs scored and three RBI.
Michelle Green (two runs, three RBI, double, triple), Madi Shane (three runs, RBI), Lauren Keller (run, three RBI, double) and Hannah Bosie (RBI) all had two hits, and Brooke
Kulek contributed a triple.
Tuesday, Cantrall fanned four as the Lady Hawks held off Petersburg PORTA 4-3. The Lady Hawks scored twice in the first and once in the third and fifth; PORTA scored once in
the fourth and twice in the sixth. In the first, Missy Jagodzinski and Michelle Green both singled; Jagodzinski later scored on a wild pitch and Green came in on Hopper’s sacrifice
fly. In the third, Green was safe on an error before moving up on Brooke Kulek’s double. Hopper then plated Green with another sacrifice fly. Cantrall singled in the fourth but was
stranded. Kulek singled with one out in the fifth and scampered home on Hopper’s double.

Schock announces 2011 Academy Nominations
Congressman Aaron Schock (R-IL) has announced that he has nominated the following students to a military academy for the class entering
the fall of 2011. Among the nominees are, for the United States Naval Academy, Keith Williams of Sherman, the son of Don and Fran Williams;
for the United States Air Force Academy, Neal Buck of Riverton, the son of David and Debra Buck; and for the United States Military Academy at
West Point, Joseph Staats of Sherman, the son of Kirk and Rebekah Staats.
Schock nominated these students for attendance at the mentioned academies after a highly competitive application and interview process.
Final determination on admission is made by the individual academy.
The process is not political and applicants do not have to personally know their Congressman to be nominated.  Graduates receive a Bachelor
of Science degree and most are commissioned as the lowest rank for a commissioned officer in each of the branches of the military.
“It’s with great pride I have the opportunity to offer nominations to our nation’s service academies,” said Schock. “Our service academics are
second to none. I’m confident that this next generation of young men and women entering military service through our academies will do so
with a great sense of determination and integrity.”

Riverton Elementary School wins national FBI/SOS Internet Challenge
Riverton Elementary School has earned the FBI-SOS (Safe Online Surfing) Internet Challenge third grade national championship for the month of December.  The students posted
the best score in the country amongst third graders to claim the highly-coveted national award.   As FBI-SOS Internet Challenge national champions for December, the students at
Riverton Elementary School received the FBI-SOS National Trophy and a visit from the FBI Jan. 21. Under the guidance of, Myron M. Oesch, Multimedia Teacher, the group of third
graders produced the top cumulative results on the FBI-SOS Internet Challenge post-quiz, which is the Internet safety program developed and administered by the Federal Bureau
of Investigation (FBI) and the Fischler School of Education and Human Services at Nova Southeastern University.   The monthly program, which runs each school year from
September through May, is a free educational program that delivers critical Internet safety information in a fun, competitive format to students in grades 3-8 with a separate monthly
challenge for each grade level.  The program is open to public and private schools and is designed to meet state and federal Internet safety mandates.  The goal of the program is
to provide students with knowledge about how to avoid dangerous situations on the Internet, specifically Internet predators.  Each month students from registered schools take an
online pre-quiz, learning about Internet safety in the scavenger hunt and then take an online quiz.  At the end of each month, six trophies (one for each grade level) are awarded to
the schools with the highest scoring students on the FBI-SOS Post-Quiz.  To date, approximately 91,000 school students in 41 states have participated in the FBI-SOS Internet
Challenge. For more information about the FBI-SOS program, please log on to www.fbi-sos.org.
Moore arrested for embezzling over $160,000 from Fountain of Life Church in
Buffalo
On Jan. 20, 2011, the Buffalo-Mechanicsburg Police Department, along with the assistance of the U.S. Marshal Fugitive Task Force, arrested Deborah A. Moore at 3:34 p.m. at her
home on a warrant. The Buffalo-Mechanicsburg Police obtained the warrant for Moore’s arrest after completing an investigation and obtaining a confession that Moore, who was
an employee at the Fountain of Life United Methodist Church in Buffalo, had stolen over $160,000 from the church between the dates of October 2009 through December 2010.
Chief William Hill stated that the investigation shows that Moore, of the 1200 block of Stanton Airport Road in Riverton, made checks payable to her and on several occasions
forged church leader’s signatures to deposit large sums of money into her personal accounts and also to pay off personal credit cards.  This has caused severe hardship on the
church, which may have to lose the services of their full-time pastor, Jennifer Seder. Moore has been charged with one count of Theft over $100,000 from a place of worship (a
Class X felony) and four counts of forgery (a Class 3 felony).
A Class X felony carries a possible sentence of 6-30 years in prison, with the Class 3 felony carrying a sentence of 2-5 years in prison. Both carry fines up to $25,000. Moore was a
former Riverton School Board member who resigned earlier this month, though she had moved out of the district several months earlier. Moore was transported to the Sangamon
County Jail for booking. Bond ws set at $150,000; Moore was subsequently bailed out.
