PHS teams take to diamond this week
Both the Pawnee High School baseball and softball teams will get the 2009 season started in earnest this week.
Weather permitting, both varsity teams played their season openers Wednesday. Both teams will play at Gillespie Thursday
(today) at 4:30 p.m.
The baseball Indians will have a doubleheader at Mt. Pulaski Saturday (10 a.m.), then will have road games at Northwestern
(March 31) and Athens (April 1) before the first home game against Northwestern Thursday, April 2 at 4:30 p.m. Pawnee will play
a junior varsity doubleheader at Auburn this Friday.
Chris Hennemann returns as head coach with a turnout of 27 players, four seniors, five juniors, 10 sophomores and eight
freshmen. Hennemann will be assisted by Raph Hennemann, Erik Angeli, Matt Millburg and Jake Murray.
The roster includes, seniors - Will Cohen, Chris Day, Alan Mundhenke and Donnie Rhoades; juniors - Jordan Day, Brock
Bennett, Garrett Mohn, Seth Nelson and Brock Wiedman; sophomores - Mack Anderson, Tre Angeli, Joel Cates, Hunter Hamilton,
Jon Schrage, Kyle McIntire, Michael Shepherd, J.D. Vandenberg, Conor Donaho and Andrew West; freshmen - Matt Allen, Brandt
Sitze, Billy Howell, Ryan Bailey, Devon Nance, Drew Shepherd, Alex Matheis and Dalton Doerfler.
The PHS softball girls will again be coached by Jim Salzeider, assisted by Becky Galloway and Donna Smargiassi.
The 21 player roster includes, seniors - Chelsey Schmittler, Courtney Dennis and Megan Fleigle; juniors - Mallory Crain, Avery
Bourne, Jori Gleich and Payge Bowen; sophomores - Allison Whaley, Hannah Davis, Rebecca Lenhart, Heather Bascom, Kari
Bowen, Chelsey Quance, Christa Pugh and Amanda Simpson; freshmen - Hannah Taylor, Maggie Birks, Taylor Mohn, Amanda
Rice, Rebecca Rhoades and Paxton Brenden.
Pawnee will play a varsity-JV twinbill at Litchfield Friday (4:30 p.m.), then will have three straight road games at Tri-City (March
30), Springfield (March 31) and Athens (April 1) before playing at home against Nokomis Friday, April 3.
