Ervin selected for Friends of the County Award
Ron Ervin has been selected as the recipient of the 2011 Friends of the County Award.
This honor is given to one individual a year who has contributed an exceptional amount of time and energy to the success of
the students and athletes of the Sangamon County Public Schools, and to the success of the county basketball tournament.
Ervin was graduated from Auburn High School in 1970 as a standout athlete who broke several school records. His name still
hangs on many plaques at the school for his record-setting accomplishments in football, basketball and track.
Ervin started officiating high school basketball while attending Eureka College and began his career in education in Gridley
where he taught and coached football from 1974 to 1980.
He worked for a short time in banking before moving to Pawnee in 1988 where he taught History and Physical Education.
During his 13 years at Pawnee High School, Ervin coached football, basketball and track.
In 2001, Ervin was hired as K-12 Principal at Divernon and began serving as a member of the Sangamon County Public
School Masters’ Association. When the Divernon and Auburn school districts merged, Ervin became an administrator of the
Auburn School District where he had earned so much respect and recognition as a student.
He was named Divernon Elementary and Auburn Junior High Principal in 2007 and continued serving as Treasurer of the
Sangamon County Public School Masters’ Association. He had also served for several years on the Illinois Elementary School
Association Board of Directors.
He is one of the very few individuals, if not the only, to have played, coached and refereed at the Sangamon County
Tournament.
“Ron Ervin’s contributions and dedication to the students and athletes of Sangamon County over his career is immeasurable,”
said Bill Lamkey, president of the School Masters Association.
Ervin died of cancer in September of 2009.
The award will be accepted in his honor by his wife Cindy and his three children, Tim, Ryan, Kelly and families, prior to the
county tourney championship game Saturday, January 15 at LLCC.
