Indians top Tri-City to end losing skid
The Pawnee Indians snapped a six-game losing streak with a 46-42 victory over Tri-City in the seventh place game of the
Sangamon County Tournament at LLCC’s Cass Gym Friday.
Nick Stevens scored 13 points and hauled down eight rebounds, both game highs, while Dalton Doerfler put together 10
points, four rebounds and four assists to lead the Indians, who avenged a early-season loss to the Tornadoes.
Pawnee is now 3-9 overall on the season, after losing 54-40 at Franklin Tuesday. The Indians lost 80-39 to Auburn in the
County consolation semifinals last Wednesday.
Garrett Galloway scored nine points for the Indians in the TC win, followed by Cade Puzey with six and four each by Cade
Hennemann and Wyatt Neisler. Tri-City (3-15) was led by A.J. Manuele’s 11 points and 10 by Colton Booth.
Tri-City got the first basket of the game but never led again after Stevens hit a free throw, then scored with 2:57 left in the first
for a 3-2 lead. Baskets by Neisler and Puzey and a three-point play by Doerfler put the Indians up 10-4 after one quarter.
Four points by Galloway and Neisler’s driving layup made it 16-10 and Doerfler’s short bank shot kept the lead at six before
TC’s Larry Kurina hit a 3-pointer with :50 left that closed the gap to 18-15 at the half.
After the Tornadoes came back for ties at 21-21 and 23-23, Pawnee got the final eight points of the 3rd frame. Stevens
cashed three free throws, Galloway scored off a Doerfler assist and Doerfler nailed a 3-pointer to make it 31-23.
Baskets by Stevens and Hennemann gave the Indians their largest lead at 35-25 and two Stevens free throws with 3:38 left
matched it at 37-27. Tri-City rallied with six straight points before Hennemann scored with 1:50 to play and the Indians held on
from the free throw line, sinking seven of 14 attempts in the final 1:41. Puzey made two with :22.7 remaining for a 45-37 lead and
one more with :11 left to make it 46-39 before Tri-City got a last second 3-pointer by Scott Fishburn to provide the final.
The Indians were 15 of 33 from the field (45 percent) and made 15 of 31 free throws while Tri-City was 17 of 43 from the field

Neisler. The Indians had 18 turnovers to 17 for Tri-City.
The Indians’ third meeting with Auburn this year was not as close as the first two games, as the Trojans raced out to a quick
13-2 lead and led 25-10 after one quarter on way to the 80-39 decision. The Trojans, who shot 54 percent for the game (30 of 55)
made 19 of 31 in the first half to build a 48-26 advantage.
Pawnee got most of its offense from Hennemann, who scored 18 points and hit all four PHS 3-point baskets, and Doerfler,
who tallied 12 on four-of-six shooting plus hitting all four of his free throw attempts. Puzey scored four, Crain and Galloway had
two points each and Brady Bennett added one point. Austin Muench paced the Trojans with 22 points and Korben Clark had 20.
Pawnee, which trailed 69-34 after three quarters, made 14 of 44 from the field and seven of 10 free throws.
Franklin, state ranked in the Class 1A polls, rode the tag-team of Scottie Thoele (23 points) and Kolten Keltner (17) to a 54-
40 MSM Conference win over the Indians Tuesday. The Flashes settled the issue in the first half, taking leads of 18-9 after one
