Jr. Indians headed back to State after 12-3 win
Pawnee advanced to the IESA Class 1A State Baseball Tourney at East Peoria with a 12-3 win over Springfield Christian in the
Sectional last Saturday at Springfield.
Pawnee will take a 19-1 mark into the state quarterfinals this Friday at 4:45 p.m. against Griggsville-Perry (15-0).
Saturday's game was played under rainy conditions, which forced a 30 minute delay in the 2nd inning and eventually led the
game to be called after six innings with the Jr. Indians on top, 12-3.
Pawnee put together five hits in the top of the first to score three runs. Cale Hennemann led off with a double and scored on
Garrett Galloway's line triple to right field. Hayden Hamilton drove Galloway home with an RBI single and Mason Bourne followed
with a single to send Hamilton to third base. Jordan Earley's single plated Hamilton for the 3-0 lead.
Springfield Christian (9-11) scored single runs in each of the first three frames off Hennemann but Pawnee pulled away with
four runs in the 3rd on five walks, a hit batsman and a single by Quinton Tomso. The Jr. Indians tacked on four more runs in the
5th when Tom Garvin led off with a single, stole second base and scored on Ryan Brenden's RBI single. After Hennemann
walked and Galloway singled, Hamilton's groundout drove in a run then Tomso's two-out single drove in two more to lead 11-3.
Pawnee's final run came in the 6th as Garvin singled with one out, stole second, and after two walks loaded the bases, Garvin
came home on a groundout by Galloway.
Hamilton pitched four scoreless innings in relief for the mound win.
This will be the second trip to the State Tournament in the last three years for Pawnee as PJHS reached the quarterfinals in
2007. The Jr. Indians also made it to State in 2002 and brought home a fourth place finish.
A win Friday would put the Jr. Indians into the semifinals at 12:15 p.m. Saturday and insure them of a plaque. The third place
game is slated for 2:30 p.m. Saturday, followed by the finals at 4:45 p.m.
