week
Both the Pawnee High School baseball and softball teams will get the
2009 season started in earnest this week. (

Baseball Indians extend winning
streak to 12
The Pawnee Indians blitzed Northwestern 19-3 Saturday to extend
their winning streak to 12 games. The Indians, who are 12-2 overall,
are now 6-0 in MSM Conference play and 2-0 in the Prairie State
Conference. (

Pawnee was second in
both the shot put and
discus at Saturday's
Rochester Invite behind
the record-setting marks of
Carlinville's Kelsey Card in
both events. Bolsen has
been setting some
records of her own in
recent meets - at an April
21 home meet, she
extended her own school
records with a 37-8 effort
in the shot put and a 110-9
1/2 mark in the discus.
Saturday, she bettered the
discus record with 111-10
while just missing on the
shot put record with a toss
of 37-3. In a quadrangular
meet Tuesday, Bolsen
again bettered her discus
record with 112-8.

welcomed back 43 former PHS baseball players for the school's
first Alumni Baseball Game Saturday afternoon. (

The Pawnee Junior High baseball team won
the Class 1A Regional title at home Monday
by blanking Lincolnwood 10-0 in five innings,
the 18th win of the season for the Jr. Indians.

Indians hammer Nokomis
Dillon Pearce scored three touchdowns and the Pawnee defense
pitched its second shutout of the season Friday as the Indians
demolished Nokomis here, 45-0. (

Pawnee advanced to the IESA Class 1A State Baseball Tourney at East
Peoria with a 12-3 win over Springfield Christian in the Sectional last
Saturday at Springfield. (

The Pawnee football Indians will shoot for the program's first eight-win
regular season since 1984 Friday as the Indians host arch-rival Auburn
in the annual "Battle of 104." (

Conference
honors
Pawnee High School had
14 athletes earn
All-Conference honors in
football and volleyball
from Prairie State
Conference coaches for
the 2009 season. In
football, the Indians had
six first-team selections,
including unanimous
choices Sean Koen at
defensive back and Dylan
Grant at linebacker. Other
first team players were Tre
Angeli (offensive tackle),
Dillon Pearce (halfback),  
onathan Schrage (fullback)
and Zach Puckett
(defensive line). Two
players were named to the
second team All-PSC on
both offense and defense,
J.D. Vandenberg (tight end
and linebacker) and Drew
Thompson (quarterback
and defensive back). Also
named to the second team
were Wesley Ferrill
(defensive line) and
Dalton Langheim
(offensive guard). Earning
honorable mention were
Mitchell Jackson and
Stanley DeSart. Lakin
Puzey of Pawnee was a
unanimous first team
All-PSC choice in
volleyball. Mallory Crain
and Payge Bowen were
named to the second team
and Avery Bourne earned
honorable mention.
Kitt Thein, head football coach at

December 3 at the Bears' training
facility. Thein and eight other coaches
were honored at halftime of the Bears
game with the St. Louis Rams at
Soldier Field in Chicago Sunday,
December 6.

The Pawnee Indians, who
have relied on a tough
defense all season, came up
with their best effort of the
year Tuesday in a 34-23
Prairie State Conference win
at New Berlin. (

Amy Pesch of Williamsville is
unable to stop Pawnee's
Amanda Simpson from scoring
two of her game-high 13 points
in the Lady Indians' 50-38 loss
Saturday in the County Classic.
Last Thursday, Simpson
scored the game-winning
basket with less than two
seconds to play as Pawnee
nipped Auburn, 26-25.
Jake Walters of Pawnee, wrestling for Auburn
High School, goes for the pin in an early
round match at 119 pounds Saturday at the
Rochester Invitational. Walters, who has a
26-9 dual meet record, was the Trojans' only
first place winner in the 10-team meet.
The Pawnee 7th grade girls won the title of
the Pawnee 2A Regional last Thursday by
knocking off Christ The King 25-22, 25-17.
The Jr. Indians then topped Mt. Pulaski for
the Sectional title Monday and will carry an
18-5 record to the IESA State Tourney in
Heyworth Saturday. Team members are,

Stevens complete a handoff
during the running of the 4x100
relay last Thursday at Auburn
as part of Pawnee High's
second place team. Nick won
the 200 with a time of 22.9
while Brad, who earlier this
year set a new PHS record of
10.8 in the 100, was second
Thursday in 11.53.
Pawnee's Payge Bowen pitched
a no-hitter Tuesday as the Lady
Indians bombed Lutheran 12-0.
Bowen struck out 10 and walked
only one in the five-inning win.

winner in both events for the
second year in a row.
