Bowen, Ward, Shepherd win school board seats
While there were no contested races for village board seats or library board seats, the contest for school board seats was a close one. Ed
Bowen, Joshua Ward and John Shepherd were the winners but Shepherd eked out a win by only seven votes. The top vote-getter was Ward with
276 votes. He was followed by Bowen with 190 and Shepherd with 176. Dale Daily and David Cooper did not secure seats. Daily received 169
votes and Cooper netted 80. Stephen Condon and Cara Sullivan-Burnley were unopposed for village board seats. There will also be a vacancy on
the village board as there were three seats available. There was no race for library board seats. Cynthia Kramer, Jenny Behrent and Sharolyn
Bradley will serve six year terms. Sara Hennemann will serve an unexpired two year term. Only 338 of 2029 registered voters (16.63 percent) cast
their votes.
Coaches versus Cancer softball game April 30
Pawnee High’s softball team will host a Coaches vs. Cancer game Saturday, April 30 at 10 a.m. against Gillespie. The team will be selling T-
shirts as part of the fundraiser, as well as 50-50 tickets and a raffle for two St. Louis Cardinals tickets will be held. To obtain an order form for a T-
shirt or to make a donation, contact Chris Salzeider (652-8756), Amy Howell (622-4650) or Keri Lederbrand (306-3506). Order forms for shirts are
also available at the high school office. An alumni softball game will be held following the high school game. The public is invited to bring the
family out for a fun-filled event and a good cause. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.
Public meeting on consolidation study May 3
A public meeting will be held Tuesday, May 3 at 7 p.m. in the Pawnee school cafeteria. The purpose of the meeting is to provide information
regarding the outcome of the consolidation feasibility study, conducted by E &H Consultants Dr. Les Hohenstein and Cliff Erwin, between the
Panhandle, Morrisonville and Pawnee School Districts.
Village Board meets in short session
All board members were present Monday evening as trustees cleared the agenda in just over one hour, adjourning at 8:05 p.m. (more)
Township property tax bills in the mail
The Pawnee Township property tax bills are in the mail. Tax payments are due no later than June 3, 2011. Payment can be made anytime by mail
to Carolyn Alspaugh, P. O. Box 104, Pawnee, IL 62558 or in person at the Pawnee Township Building, 507 Fifth Street, during the following hours:
Mondays and Wednesdays (starting May 9), 9-11:30 a.m. and 1-4:30 p.m.; May 24: 5-6:30 p.m. and May 31 through June 3, open everyday but
closed Memorial Day. All payments made during this time period should be made to the local collector. You can pay the first installment only or
the total bill. If you choose to make the first installment and then decide to also pay the second installment later during this collection period,
make both payments to the local collector. If you have any questions call 625-3221 (office) or 625-7219 (home). The county now has a website.

REMINDER: Homeowners who have reached the age of 65 should apply for the senior citizen exemption by going, in person, to the Sangamon
County Building, Room 210, Springfield, IL. This exemption is for all homeowners, age 65 or older, regardless of income. You must take proof of
age with you. This form only needs to be filled out one time. Also, only one owner needs to be 65 years of age. If you are 65 years of age or older,
you can also apply for the senior citizen tax freeze. This is income based. If your income (including all household members) is $55,000 or less
you are entitled to receive the senior citizen tax freeze.  Again, apply for this exemption at the Sangamon County Building, Room 210. You
musttake your tax form or other proof of income with you.
PHS Jr./Sr. Prom set for Sat., May 14
The Pawnee High School 2011 Junior-Senior Prom will be held Saturday evening, May 14, at the Panther Creek Country Club.  However, festivities
will begin at Pawnee High School with the “Grand March” beginning at 4:30 p.m. in the Varsity Gym.  The juniors and seniors and their dates will
be introduced followed by coronation of the Prom King and Queen. All spectators must be seated in the varsity gym by 4:30 before the Grand
March begins.  No spectators will be admitted to the gym after the start of the March until the end of the entry of the Court.  Following the naming of
the King and Queen and pictures of them and the Court by the Prom photographer, anyone else interested in taking pictures may do so.  In
addition, all Prom pictures will be taken at the high school before students go to Panther Creek Country Club.  Following the coronation and all
picture taking, students and their dates will proceed to the Prom site for the dinner and dance.  Because of space limitations and Panther Creek
Country Club rules, only those attending the Prom will be allowed entrance to the Prom itself. Again this year, parents of junior class students are
sponsoring an “After-Prom” party to be held at the YMCA in Taylorville from 12:00 midnight to 3:30 a.m.  Many prizes have been donated and
collected and will be given to those in attendance.
Pawnee severe weather boundaries, shelters
Pawnee has several steps in place in the event of severe weather. This is an informational article outlining safe havens and procedures.
If there is a severe thunderstorm warning or tornado warning in the vicinity of Pawnee’s jurisdictional weather boundary line public shelters will be
opened up. Pawnee’s weather boundary is as follows: north boundary is Toronto Road; south boundary is Montgomery County line; east
boundary is Christian County line and west boundary is Route 4 Shelters will be available until the threats are out of the weather boundaries. The
shelters are located at Pawnee Assembly of God Church, 1001 8th Street and Pawnee Fire Department, 711 8th Street. The firehouse is for
disabled citiziens only, and they must provide their own transportation. (All should park on the west side of the building.) There will be no pets
allowed at either shelter. Sirens will be activated when an immediate threat of any kind is in the jurisdictional area. Each resident should have an

Lions Club Christmas Basket Food Drive begins Nov. 25
The annual Pawnee Lions Club Christmas Basket Food Drive traditionally begins the day after Thanksgiving. The baskets provide Pawnee area
families with a holiday feast of turkey and all the trimmings. The baskets are delivered the Saturday before Christmas; this year’s delivery date is
Saturday, December 17. Many Pawnee families and business people have embraced the Lions Christmas Basket Food Drive every year and it
has become a holiday tradition for many; a way to share the bounty of the season and to help all families enjoy a Christmas feast.  This Saturday,
there will only be four weeks until delivery and this year the Pawnee Lions would like to invite more individuals, families and business people to
become part of this community holiday tradition.  Food items, boxed or canned and cash donations may be made at the following locations:
Pawnee United Community Bank, First National Bank-Pawnee, Snelling-Chevalier Real Estate office or at the Village Hall. Individuals, merchants
or organizations may also contact Project Chairman Denny Seiz at 741-2462. The Pawnee Lioness will pack fruit baskets to be delivered on the
same date. The fruit basket, delivered to Pawnee Senior Citizens, is a small token of thanks for the many contributions made to the community
over the years.  Come delivery day with the help from student organizations, Boy Scouts and or Explorers, the Lions will quickly fill the baskets
using a tried and true assembly line method to ensure that all baskets are delivered to recipients by noon.
Pawnee Chamber Christmas on the Square set for Dec. 2
The Pawnee Area Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual Christmas on the Square, Friday, Decmber 2 from 6 until 9 p.m.  Santa will be there
to light the Christmas tree and to visit with the children to find out if they have been naughty or nice and to hear that all important Christmas list. In
addition, the Chamber is sponsoring a homemade ornament contest. Children Pre-K through 6th grade are invited to make an ornament for
judging and the opportunity to win gift certificates from local businesses and Toys R US. Judging begins at 6:30 p.m. Once judging is complete,
the children can place their ornament on the community Christmas tree. The Chamber recommends that ornaments be weatherproof.
If you bring items, canned or boxed goods, for the food pantry, you can have your name placed in the drawing for a large stocking full of toys.  
There will be vendors set up in the K of C Hall for shopping. Entertainment and refreshments will be provided.

Pawnee Creative Arts program set for
Dec. 17
 If you want or need a respite from all of the holiday hurley-burley, the Pawnee Creative Arts
students have just the ticket, or the number of tickets you will need.  On Saturday, December 17,
the students are presenting two Christmas plays, A Candy Kane Christmas, the story of Candy
Kane, a not-so-happy teen that is convinced that all of her troubles would be over if she could
change her unusual name. The second play, Santa and the Wicked Wazoo tells the tale of a hot-
tempered leprechaun who shows up at Santa’s workshop wanting Santa to shrink him to the
size of all the other leprechauns. A very busy Santa has other things to worry about and The
Wicked Wazoo, a witch, has some terrible plans to turn Santa’s land into a territory for “The
Mean and Nasty” banishing Christmas.   This is the night for parents, grandparents to grab the
kids and head to the school for an early evening of pure family enjoyment. The performance will
be held in the high school auditorium, curtain goes up at 4:30 p.m. Tickets, $3 for students, $5
for adults are available from any Creative Arts student or can be purchased at the door the
evening of the performance.  
Elementary school Christmas program set
for Dec. 13
 The Pawnee students, grades Kindergarten through Sixth, will present their annual Christmas
program Tuesday, December 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the varsity gym. The program will be filled with
holiday music for all to enjoy.  Old favorites include:  "Joy to the World", "Let It Snow", "Rudolph
the Red-Nosed Reindeer", and of course "Jingle Bells".  New songs to hear include:  "Mele
Kalikimaka", "Rock-N-Roll Snowman", and "We Will Jingle". All students are asked to dress
nicely for the performance and arrive at school by 6:15 p.m.  They will report to their classrooms
to deposit coats, take attendance and get lined up. The entire community is invited to bring your
Christmas cheer and come enjoy the program.

PCEF adds four board members, sets
fundraiser
       The Pawnee Community Education Foundation met January 16 and accepted four new
board members, Teri Clarke, Pat Murphy, Jay Sheedy and Kris Shelton. The new members will
work with current members to receive and administer funds that are used to fund scholarships
for graduating seniors at Pawnee High School.
The PCEF is planning a fundraising event, the
Foundation Student Showcase, to be held Saturday, March 24 at the school. The event will
feature a sit-down dinner, student art exhibits, and performances by the band and choir. More
information on the event will be forthcoming in future issues of the Pawnee Post.
High school orientation set for Mon., Feb.
13
       Pawnee High School will be holding High School Orientation on Monday, February 13 at 6:
30 p.m. in the High School Auditorium.  Incoming Freshmen Orientation, which is this year’s 8th
grade class, will begin at 6:30.  Sophomore-Senior Orientation will begin at 7:30.
 Students will
receive the Course Planning Handbook for the 2012-2013 school year as well learn about new
changes to the course requirements and course offerings at PHS.  
 Beginning at 7 p.m., a
special presentation will be given by representatives from Lincoln Land Community College,
Capital Area Career Center (CACC), the S.T.E.P. Work Program, as well as the Department of
Human Services.  Dual credit opportunities as well as work opportunities will be discussed.
