Trustees amend zoning chapter, increase variance fees

Zoning and variance issues dominated trustee discussion during the June 23 village board meeting. While trustees approved two
ordinances, one a variance request, the other amending the Zoning Chapter of the Village Code of Ordinances, two variance requests

PHS Alumni Reunion to be held July 27
The 107th anniversary of the Pawnee Alumni Association reunion will be held Sunday, July 27 in the air-conditioned Pawnee Schools
cafeteria. Seating will be at comfortable tables and chairs.
The social hour will begin at 12 noon and dinner will be served at 1 p.m. The cost is $16 per person and checks can be made payable
to the Pawnee High School Alumni Association and mailed to Carolyn Alspaugh, P.O. Box 104, Pawnee, IL 62558. The reservation
deadline is July 13.
This year's honored class is the Class of 1958. Members are Robert Alexander, Norma Jo Alvies Clark, Ed Beierman, Lorene Bottrell
Stillwell, Art Brown, Tim Cashen, Wayne Crowl, Jack Dickey, Ron Dickey, Tom Fowler, Charles Frazee, Donna Frain Morgan, Marie

Angela Oliver was chosen by the
Springfield Business Journal as one

Trustees pass numerous ordinances

Sports physicals remain current for exactly one year and athletes must have current sports physicals on file with the head coach and
athletic director prior to participating in any school sport. This includes the fall sports, which begin practicing in the summer before

Pawnee among first 100 towns to participate in SAB
The Save Abandoned Babies Foundation (SAB) announced Pawnee to be among the first 100 Illinois towns in compliance with a law
passed Aug. 17, 2007. This law (SB0335) requires that all Illinois hospitals, fire stations, police stations, and sheriff offices that are
“Safe Havens” to post regulated signs on the exterior of the building in a conspicuous location. (more)
School registration set Tuesday, August 5
Pawnee Pre-K, elementary, middle school, and high school registration is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 12 noon and 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday,
August 5. Textbook rental is $80 for K-12 and the Technology User Fee is $25 for first-12th. There are additional fees including: P.E.
locks - $5, P.E. shorts - $12 ($2 extra for 2XL and larger) as well as a few class and participation fees. School physicals for students
entering Pre-K, Early Childhood Education, kindergarten, sixth and ninth grades should be turned in at registration, but no later than
the first day of school. Hearing and vision exams are required for students entering kindergarten, second and sixth grades and should
be turned in at registration, but no later than the first day of school. Dental exams for second and sixth grades should be turned in at
registration, but no later than the first day of school.
The first day of student attendance is Tuesday, August 19. School will be dismissed at 10 a.m. There will be 2 p.m. dismissals from
Wednesday, August 20 through Friday, August 29. On Monday, August 18, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., "Meet the Teachers" will be held for
parents and students entering ECE-third grade. Parents of students in grades 4-12 will attend "Meet the Teachers" Monday, August 25.
The fourth-eighth grade schedules run from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and ninth-12th grade will meet from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Meet the Teachers
for 4-12 grades is for parents to become acquainted with schedules and rules. Regulations will also be reviewed. Your attendance is
welcome. Meal prices are as follows: Breakfast, $5/week; Lunch, K-6 $8.75/week; 7-12 $10/week; extra milk, 30 cents/day; lost or
damaged lunch ticket: replacement cost.
Pawnee PTO to meet Monday, August 4
The Pawnee Parent-Teacher Organization will hold its first meeting of the 2008-09 school year Monday, August 4 at 7 p.m. at the
Pawnee Public Library. All parents, grandparents, teachers and community members are encouraged to attend and assist the PTO
with the upcoming school year activities.
Pawnee CUSD in-town bus route changes
Pawnee Community Unit School District has announced in-town bus route changes. The change is being made due to rapidly rising
fuel costs and lack of state reimbursement. (more)
Ernie Ashby honored for photography at SIU-C
Former Pawnee resident Ernie Ashby had his second photograph on display at this year's spring graduate photography show held at
Mitchell Gallery in the Cederhurst Center for the Arts in Mt. Vernon. This year's entry was a street scene in the Montmarte section of
Paris taken while Ashby was traveling in France last summer with a select group of photography professors, graduate students and
senior photography students. The photograph won Honorable Mention in the International Studies for Photography at Southern Illinois
University and was selected to be published in this year's membership bulletin for the Cedarhurst Center. Ashby had a show of his
photographs in Studio A at WSIU in Carbondale in May. The show, entitled "Travel," featured photos taken during his travels across the
United States. He was this year's recipient of the Lee O'Brian Award, the highest student award presented by WSIU. Ashby, the son of
Ernest and Linda Ashby of Pawnee, graduated from SIU May 10 and is now employed by WSIU Public Broadcasting in Carbondale.
