Indians bomb Girard, 59-0
Pawnee became playoff-eligible for the second straight year with its fifth win of the season Saturday as the football Indians
bombed Girard 59-0 here for Homecoming. The Indians will play at Gillespie Friday at 7 p.m.
The Indians, now 5-1 on the year and 4-1 in the PSC, dominated every phase of the game. Pawnee amassed 479 total yards
while limiting the Big Red to just 85 yards and four first downs.
The PHS defense not only pitched a shutout, the first against Girard since 1986, but came up with two takeaways, four sacks
and five other tackles for losses. Girard had the ball for less than 14 minutes and converted just one of 10 3rd down chances and
failed on two 4th down attempts. The Big Red averaged less than a yard per rushing play, gaining 28 yards on 31 carries.
Pawnee had 380 rushing yards on 29 carries, a 13.1 yard per play average, and had two players top 100 yards as Stanley
Desart had 140 yards on seven carries and Cody Reynolds had 130 yards on five attempts. Jonathan Schrage gained 64 yards
on four carries and Dillon Pearce had 32 yards on six tries.
Drew Thompson completed all three of his pass attempts for 99 yards, with two going for touchdowns to Pearce and J.D.
Vandenberg, and scored on a short td run.
Sean Koen had three solo tackles and four assists and Vandenberg had three solos, including two sacks and 1 1/2 tackles for
losses, plus three assists on defense. Other defensive leaders were Nick Stevens (two solos, three assists), Wesley Ferrill (two
solos, one sack, one tackle for loss, two assists), Pearce (two solos, one assist), Thompson (one solo, three assists, one
interception), Schrage (one solo, three assists), Tre Angeli (four assists), Reynolds (three assists), Dylan Grant (one solo
tackle for loss, two assists), and Zach Puckett (one solo, two assists).
Pawnee, which had 13 first downs and punted only once in the game, took the lead with 6:45 left in the first quarter when
Schrage rambled 52 yards for a touchdown. Pearce ran for the two-point conversion and an 8-0 lead.
The Indians moved in front 36-0 at halftime with four 2nd quarter scores. Thompson hooked up with Pearce for a 24 yard
touchdown and later came back to Vandenberg for a 64 yard touchdown with 6:53 left in the 2nd frame. Desart ran for the
two-point conversion after Vandenberg's td.
With 4:01 remaining, Desart dashed 63 yards to paydirt to make it 28-0. The Indians got their final touchdown of the half when
Shaquil Hayes recovered a blocked punt and took the ball into the end zone from three yards out. Pearce's two-point conversion
run made it 36-0.
Pawnee achieved the running clock via the 40-point rule early in the 3rd quarter when Pearce ran 30 yards for a touchdown and
Thompson passed to Grant for the two-pointer and a 44-0 advantage. With :10 remaining in the 3rd quarter, Thompson scored
on a one-yard run and Vandenberg caught a pass for the two-pointer from Hunter Hamilton.
The Indians got their last score from long distance with 8:07 remaining in the 4th frame on a 95 yard run by Reynolds, and
Hayes kicked the PAT to provide the final, 59-0. The long td run by Reynolds is three yards shy of the school record of 98 yards set
by Pearce in 2007 against Williamsville.
The 59 points was the most ever scored by the Indians against Girard and was easily the most lopsided win from the Pawnee
side in the series, eclipsing a 38-0 victory in 1977.
The Post records show that Friday's matchup will be the first time Pawnee and Gillespie have met on the gridiron since the
PHS program was restarted in 1950. The two teams are tied for second place in the PSC at 4-1 but the Indians have displayed a
much tougher defense, allowing only 41 points all season while Gillespie has given up 198. The Indians also have the edge in
points scored, 239-183.
