Historical Society holds annual meeting
Approximately 50 people attended the annual meeting of the New Berlin Area Historical Society (NABHS) Sun., Jan. 15, at the
Sangamon County Fair’s Timber Lodge, where special exhibits were set up in the main room of the complex to promote various
ongoing activities of the Society.
It was an exciting and productive event for the Society as it also delved into planning for the 2015 Sesquicentennial event for
New Berlin.
In addition to a weekend of activities, an updated history book is being compiled. This project is being spearheaded by
Courtney Dzierwa, who is actively seeking contributions from the general public
The well-received workshop atmosphere was a deviation from the usual pattern of entertainment and included a
membership table, a table regarding the 2015 history book for the upcoming New Berlin Sesquicentennial (150th) Celebration, a
display of the Veterans Memorial currently under construction on the east side of town and information regarding the Veterans
History Book that is being compiled, a quilt raffle, a silent auction and special exhibits by guests Lyle Behl of Rochester and Bob
and Bill Deck of Girard.
Behl, who has family ties to New Berlin, offered a fascinating display of historical documents. He also served as a valuable
source of information regarding cemetery walks, as he was an organizer and chairman of the successful 2011 cemetery walk at
Rochester. NBAHS is planning a similar event this coming May at Woodwreath Cemetery adjacent to Island Grove United
Methodist Church on the Old Jacksonville Road, west of New Berlin.)
The Deck brothers, Girard community leaders and retired druggists, were on hand to share a wealth of information about
Girard’s Sesquicentennial history book and fund-raising events related to its celebration.
During a brief business meeting, those reelected to two year terms on the Board of Directors were William Pfeffer, James C.
Davenport, James G. Davenport and Olivia Casson. Other board members include Jodi Marr, Minnie Price, Gail Clark and Donna
Brewer.
Dzierwa gave an informative update regarding the history book project and advised that she has printed out some guidelines
for submission of information and photographs. She can be contacted by email at book@newberlinareahistory.org. or you can
contact any member of the board for assistance in obtaining more information.
Winner of the antique quilt raffle was Taylor Pensoneau of New Berlin. Floral doorprizes were won by Alvin Brewer and Gail
Clark, both of Loami.
All participants at the meeting enjoyed a fried chicken potluck dinner.
