Loami Elementary Building offered to village of Loami
By Linda Hughes
The New Berlin School Board is offering (gifting) the Loami Elementary School Building to the Village of Loami.
School board president Chris Gordon said Monday at the board meeting that he has talked with Loami village president Al
Mann. He said Mann asked him questions about the lot size, heating costs, and if there are any problems with asbestos.
Gordon said he would furnish Mann with answers so that Mann can take them to his village board meeting in February.
The school board has been looking at options for the building. School architects determined the high cost of maintaining
the building and of bringing it up to code for use again as a school.
In other matters, Superintendent Valerie Carr recommended to the board that the Community Based Education Class be
moved from Porta school in Petersburg to the New Berlin Elementary School the next school year.
Carr stressed that the pupils would be back in their own community, that the move would reduce the number of aides
required and that the district would have control over the curriculum. She also touched on the transportation required now with
lift buses.
She emphasized serving the pupils.
New Berlin elementary school principal Casey Wills estimated that the CBE class next year would probably start with
seven pupils.
Carr reported on the use of an Illinois State Board of Education revolving technology loan. She said the district is
purchasing iPads and laptops for use in the classrooms.
