The Pretzel Softball Camp was held April 5-9
with 12 girls participating. The girls spent the
week receiving instruction from the New
Berlin High School coaching staff and
players. Girls who attended the camp

Brooks competes in
discus in pair of
European meets
Lance Brooks, who has been competing at the
national level in the discus for several years,
recently spent 10 days in Europe competing in a
pair of major track and field meets. At a meet in
Dusseldorf, Germany (Osterfeld) July 9, Brooks
took seventh place in the discus with a best of
57.79 meters. The winning throw was 64.18
meters. Brooks then threw 59.85 meters (196 feet)
to take third place in a July 13 meet at Prague,
Czech Republic, where a best of 60.90 was first.
According to USA Track and Field, this ranks
Brooks fourth among United States competitors
and he ranks 14th in the world, according to the
International Association of Athletic Foundation.
Brooks, who graduated from New Berlin High
School in 2002 and Millikin University in 2006,
would like to thank everyone who has supported
him in his efforts to continue his athletic career. He
is still pursuing his dream to participate at the
2012 Summer Olympics in London as a member
of the USA team.

Big plays earn Pretzels

Buoyed by a couple of big plays, the football Pretzels
came up a winner in their season's opener Friday,
knocking off NorthMac 12-7. (

The WFNB Lady Scotties won their
Invitational Tournament with a perfect mark
and are off to a 7-0 start. Team members,
are, not in order, with coach Scott

Turner, Maggie Tarr, Sydney Timmons,
Brette Simpson, Josie Mutch, Rita Nickell,
Savannah Ashbaugh, Courtney Schroeder
and Amber Kloppe.
Ali Loos, who scored 48
points in four games, was
selected for the
All-Tournament Team at the
recent Riverton Holiday
Tournament where the Lady
Scotties finished four in the
16-team field.
Lady Scotties beat
Auburn for 21st win
WFNB celebrated Senior Night with a bang, winning
its 21st game of the season 67-48 over Auburn. The
Lady Scotties, now 21-6 overall, played Mt. Olive (at
home), weather permitting, in their regular season
finale Wednesday. The regional starts Monday and
the Scotties are the No. 1 seed at Pittsfield. They will
meet the winner of Monday's Kincaid-Auburn contest
at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The title game is set for Thursday
at 7:30 p.m. Also in the tourney are the host school
and North Mac who play Tuesday at 8 p.m. The
second quarter was big for the Scotties in their win
over Auburn, scoring 25 points to go on top 36-21 at
the half. Rita Nickell dropped in four points and Ali
Loos had a trey in the opening quarter, the locals
taking a relatively slim 11-6 edge. Then Loos took
over hitting 10 second quarter points, which included
a three-ball and three of four charities. Vanna
Ashbaugh pitched in with five, Sydney Timmons with
four. Nickell added six more in the third frame, Ashlyn
Fore with four, the Scotties pushing their lead to 53-30
after three. SCORING: Loos 18, Nickell 12, Ashbaugh
12, Simpson 7, Fore 6, Timmons 6, Amber Kloppe 4,
Courtney Schroeder 2.
Spring soccer
registration
begins
Do you have kids 4-13 who want to
play soccer this spring? If so, sign
them up in the YMCA youth soccer
program. Games are played during
the months of April and May. Four and
five years olds play on Friday night.
Everyone else plays on Saturday. Sign
up forms and more information can

The high school cheerleading squad placed
13th in the IHSA Competitive Cheer state
tourney at Bloomington Saturday, one of 25
schools competing. The Pretzels  earned
state by placing third in the Troy Sectional a
week earlier. This weekend the girls will take
part in the Illinois Cheerleading Coaches
Association Tourney in Springfield after
placing second and third in two qualifying
tourneys. Team members, from the left, front,

half effort to defeat Pittsfield 49-37 in the
Class 2A Regional finals at Pittsfield last

Baseball, softball registrations slated
Registration dates for the summer youth baseball and softball leagues will be
Saturday, February 26 at the New Berlin Village Hall and Saturday, March 5 at the Loami
Village Hall. Hours for both will be 8 a.m. to 12 noon. The LNBYBL is for boys and girls
in the New Berlin/Loami School District who would like to play ball.
Coach Pitch baseball is for kids ages 4-6; softball is for girls ages 6-14 and baseball is
for boys ages 6-14. The fee to participated this year is $55 for Coach Pitch and $65 for
all other players if registered on February 26 or March 5. Discounts are available for
multiple family members. The registration fee will increase by $20 for those not
registering on one of these dates. Fee waivers for part of or the entire fee are available
for those who register on one of these dates, but are unable to pay.
All players are encouraged to come with their parents/guardian to the registration. For
those attending one of these dates, shirt samples will be available for sizing and the
player will be able to choose his or her number (first-come basis). Information about
pictures and the yearly fundraiser will also be distributed.
Practices will begin in early April. Games will begin mid-May and continue through
June. To register, please attend one of the sign up dates. A copy of the player's birth
certificate must accompany the registration unless previously supplied to the league. If
