Preschool developmental screening
set for March 3 and 4
A vision, hearing and developmental screening for 2 1/2 to 5 year old children in New
Berlin School District will take place March 3 and 4 from 9 to 2 p.m. Please call
488-6054 to schedule an appointment. This preschool screening will be provided by
Community Unit School District #16. Developmental areas to be checked include
speech, language, and basic concepts. We estimate approximately one hour to
complete all aspects of the screening. Parents interested in the pre-kindergarten
program for the 2011-2012 school year are encouraged to bring their children to this
screening. The pre-kindergarten staff will be present to answer questions. If you
know of a family who has a preschool child, please pass this information on to them.

Weast named WBSB Senior Vice
President
Warren-Boynton State Bank has announced the promotion of Jim Weast to the
position of Senior Vice President. Weast has been employed by the bank since
1996. He is a graduate of Kansas State University with a B.S. degree in Business
and currently resides in New Berlin. He has 15 years of banking experience and is
currently Cashier of the bank responsible for all bank operations and regulatory
compliance. He also has past lending experience in residential real estate,
consumer, and agricultural loans. Additionally, Weast serves as secretary of both the
bank board and its holding company, W.B. Bancorp, Inc. Warren-Boynton State Bank
was founded in 1877 and since that time has continuously served the needs of New
Berlin and the surrounding area. The bank has assets of approximately $114 million
and offers a full range of financial services from its locations in New Berlin and
Springfield.
This year the New Berlin Jr. High School held
a Fannie May candy sale for its annual
fundraiser. For every 20 boxes a student
sold, their name went into  a regional
drawing with a first place prize of $1,000 and
second place prize of $500. New Berlin's
own Dan Nagel, seventh grader at NBJHS,

Historical Society seeks photographs
New Berlin Area Historical Society members have been asked to prepare a DVD
slide show highlighting various businesses, buildings, social functions, etc. for
presentation at the annual New Berlin High School 50-plus class reunion. (

New Berlin residents will soon have a way to be notified of emergencies or events by
way of Internet, e-mail or cell phone. (

NBAVMA silent auction Sunday, April
10
The New Berlin Area Veterans Memorial Association has announced plans to hold a
silent auction on Sunday, April 10 at the New Berlin Knights of Columbus Hall.   One
hundred percent of the proceeds from the auction will go towards the Memorial. A
number of great items have already been donated.  Additional items would be
appreciated.  Local businesses are encouraged to donate gift certificates for
products and services.  Monetary donations are always appreciated.  This memorial
cannot be built without those who are making monetary donations.  All donations are
tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. Plans for the memorial are well
under way. A granite supplier has been selected.  Within the next few weeks, the
granite supplier will be delivering a scale model of the planned memorial which will
be placed on display for all to see.  The list of individuals and organizations who
have agreed to donate their labor and/or materials continues to grow.  Site work will
continue as weather permits.  If you have anything to donate for the silent auction,

CWLP water purchasing concerns to
be addressed
The South Sangamon Water Commission is preparing a response to a letter voicing
City Water Light and Power’s concerns with New Berlin purchasing water from
Chatham, provided by Springfield. (

Bridges, three newcomers elected to
school board
The New Berlin School Board will have a decided new look with three new members
to take seats in May. Dave Bridges, the only incumbent on the ballot, was  the top
vote getter in seeking another three-year term in Tuesday's election. He had 552
votes in a closely contested race. Also elected were Matt Burns with 536 votes,
Jeffrey Eason with 488 and Phillip Wyatt with 484.  Ed Riedel, a former member of
the board, received 461 votes. Holdover members of the board are Bill Alexander,
Cindy Burger and Chris Gordon. Retiring members are Al Mann, Bob Kaaz and the
current president Rich Behl.
Blood drive at New Berlin K of C
Saturday, April 16
A blood drive to support the Central Illinois Community Blood Center will be held at
the New Berlin Knights of Columbus Saturday, April 16 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. The
KC Hall is located at 715 East Illinois Street. Appointments at the blood drive can be
scheduled online at www.CICBC.org or by calling (217) 241-7539. Walk-ins are also
always welcome. The CICBC is a not-for-profit organization that provides blood to 19
area hospitals.

Chicken dinner fundraiser set for May
10
The New Berlin Junior High and High School cheerleaders will hold a take-out
chicken dinner fundraiser Tuesday, May 10. Each dinner includes: one-half chicken,
mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, roll and butter. Dinners can be picked up by
driving through the Pretzel Dome parking lot from 5:30 to 7:30 May 10. The cost is
$10 per dinner. Tickets are available from all high school or junior high
cheerleaders, by emailing Risa Kirkpatrick at rkirkpatrick@siumed.edu, or text or call
orders in to Maureen Bossert at (217) 341-9672. Proceeds from the dinner will go
towards the purchase of uniforms and warmups.
Doyle takes over as principal Aug. 1
Hattie Doyle is the new high school principal. She will take over for Steve Groll, who
has resigned, August 1. Doyle, a native of New Athens, Illinois where she was
graduated from high school, says she is looking forward to her new job and plans to
live in the community. "I think it is important to be where you work and where your
kids go to school."
Before accepting the principal's post at NBHS, Doyle served the last two years as
District Curriculum Coordinator for the Waterloo, Illinois School District. Prior to that,
2005-2009, she was principal at Valmeyer High School. A graduate of McKendree
College in Lebanon, Illinois, Doyle has a Bachelor of Arts degree in
Biology-Secondary Education. She earned her Master's in Education Administration
at SIU-E. She also taught science for 10 years at both Belleville Althoff and Waterloo
High Schools. Supt. of Schools Val Carr said she was looking forward to Doyle
joining the team and the wealth of knowledge and experience she brings in
curriculum planning. Doyle, who has three daughters, likes to jog, do landscaping,
read and spend time with her family. The girls are Taylor 19, a student at McKendree
College; McKenzie, who will be a sophomore in high school and Gracie, a fifth grader.

New Berlin School Board names
Adam Ehrman as superintendent
The Board of Education at CUSD #16  announces the selection of Adam Ehrman as
the District Superintendent beginning July 1, 2012.  Ehrman will succeed Mrs. Valerie
Carr who will be retiring on June 30, 2011 after 15 years with the District. Ehrman, the
current superintendent of Franklin CUSD #1, obtained his administrative degrees at
Eastern Illinois University. Ehrman taught Junior High Social Studies at St. Anne
Community Consolidated School District #256 from 2003 to 2007.  From 2007 –
2009 he served as Principal of East Grade School (PreK-1) and Franklin Jr./Sr. High
School (grades 6-12) at Franklin CUSD #1.  From 2009 to the present, he has served
as the Superintendent of the Franklin School District.   Ehrman and his family
currently reside in Ashland.  Mr. Ehrman stated that he is “enthusiastic to become a
part of the New Berlin School District and start integrating into the community.”  (From

NBAVMA benefit Sunday, Dec. 11
A benefit for the New Berlin Area Veterans Memorial Association, a Breakfast Buffet,
will be held at Shepp's Bar and Grill Sunday, December 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for kids. Price includes one buffet trip, coffee, juice,
soda or tea.
Dottie Crews is the recipient of the Holly Jack
Administrative Secretary of the Year Award.
Crew has been administrative secretary to
the superintendent at New Berlin and
recording secretary for the school board for
the past 28 years. She will retire in June,
2012. She was selected from 25 nominees
and received the award recently in Chicago at
the annual State School Board Convention.
Holiday Lights Contest set for Dec.
12-18
The village of New Berlin will hold its fifth annual Holiday Lights Contest this holiday
season. The contest will be held December 12-18 and is open to all residents of the
village of New Berlin. Register at the Village Hall by December 9 to enter. Judging
will be between 6-8 p.m. December 12-18 so have your display illuminated during
those times. Register at Village Hall by e-mail village@newberlin.il.us or by phone at
488-6312. Be sure to include your address.
First place will be $50, second place $25, third place $15 and fourth place $10.
