Firehouse, village hall designated as
winter emergency centers
During the blizzard in February, 2011, volunteers from the New Berlin-Island Grove
Fire Department and EMS manned the firehouse during the power and phone
outages. Since the facility was powered by a generator, several families with young
children and some with uncomfortably cold homes came to the firehouse to stay
warm and wait out the storm. This year as winter approaches, the New Berlin-Island
Grove Fire Protection District Board of Trustees has offered use of the facility during
extreme conditions.
The Village of New Berlin has joined the effort to provide a warm place for area
residents to go if the conditions warrant. Both facilities are generator equipped
providing heat, lights, restroom facilities and communications, but neither is
equipped with sleeping facilities, although some brought sleeping bags, blankets
and pillows and made do in the warm atmosphere. When extreme conditions or
disasters exist, where an extended power outage looms, the Sangamon County
Dispatch as well as the news outlets will be notified that the warming centers are
open. The firehouse at 101 N. Oak Street (Oak and Illinois) will be the primary facility
with the Village Hall at 301 E. Illinois will open for any overflow.  These facilities will
be available to the New Berlin - Island Grove Community only during extreme
weather emergencies with prolonged power outages or disasters.
