During this past summer, Bob Hilligoss,
social studies teacher at Auburn Junior High
at Divernon, along with his friend Henry
Weaver, became acquainted with a group of
college students from the People’s Republic
of China. The students were in America as
part of a work study group sponsored by their
government. Their goals were to improve
their use of the English language and to
learn about American culture. Prior to this,
the girls worked at the Gateway to the Glacier
International Park in Kalispell, Montana.
Taking Mr. Hilligoss’s invitational to visit his
school, the girls took the time to visit in
September where they spoke to the students
about their lives in China and answered
many questions. After their visit, the group
toured several Springfield attractions,
including the Abraham Lincoln Presidential
Library and Lincoln’s Tomb. Courtney
Murphy served as master of ceremonies for
the event. Pictured are, left to right: Mr.
Hilligoss, Mengyl Yu (Michelle), Mengxian
Zheng (Veronica), Yue Dong (Amy), Con

Divernon UMC sponsoring Holiday
Giving Mission
The Divernon United Methodist Church Food Pantry is sponsoring a community-wide
Holiday Giving Mission. With your help, it is the church's goal to provide families with a
bountiful Thanksgiving basket and a joyful Christmas. In 2009, the DUMC and the
Divernon community served 20 families during the holiday season. The need to help
continues today. You can be part of this mission by making a voluntary donation or by
letting us know of a family who would welcome some holiday cheer. Donations received
will be used to purchase traditional holiday items. Any monetary donation is welcomed; all
are tax deductible. Please make checks payable to the DUMC Food Pantry and mail to
DUMC, 503 S. Second Street, Divernon, IL 62530. A $45 donation covers the cost of a
traditional holiday feast, which will feed a family of 4-5. Donations must be received by
November 19. If you have questions, please call 628-3530.
